Making Sense of SSI Disability

June 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 195

The SSI disability program or the Supplemental Security Income program is designed to help blind, aged, or disabled people who don't have the means to help themselves. The program only covers those with a low income and it will give them what they need to survive.

Each month the program provides money for food, clothing and shelter. Each of these is deemed as an essential for survival and depending on your income level you will qualify for a percentage of what you need to pay for all of these. Only low income individuals are able to qualify for SSI at all and getting a job is one of the quickest ways to cut off the benefits.

The Supplemental Security Income program is very different from the Social Security Program. While SSI draws its money directly from taxes that are paid to the government, the Social Security Program pays for itself through Social Security taxes specifically. If you did not pay enough in you will not get anything back from Social Security, which could leave you in a bad place at some point.

If you happen to live with somebody else who pays for your housing then you will get less money from SSI. They factor in the amount of money that you are in charge of getting and if it is being taken care of by someone else then you won't need as much for survival and the money will go to someone else who needs it more.

In many states if you qualify for SSI you probably also qualify for Medicaid and won't have to worry about your medical bills. Some states will consider an SSI application as a Medicaid application as well and others will not. Check into the exact rules to find out whether you have to apply for both separately or not.

While SSI will often cover some of your food needs you would be better off if you applied to SNAP as well if you are low on food after your benefits. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program gives you additional money for food and SSI users usually qualify for it automatically.

Always be careful to state an accurate amount of income and expenses. If you get more money than you are supposed to and the government finds out they will ask for all that money back. You will either have to send them the money within 30 days or they will start taking it from you at a rate of 10 percent of your income each month.

SSI disability is a great program for anyone who is suffering from a qualifying ailment. Not only can it give you what you need to survive, but it qualifies you to a bunch of other programs that will also make your life easier.
