How to Know If You Qualify for SSI Disability

July 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 281

One of the most helpful government programs out there is the SSI Disability program. A person that is legitimately disabled, and cannot work to provide an income for themselves for their family because of it, may be able to apply and get approved for a monthly check that they can then use to cover their expenses and live.

This is the SSI disability check, and millions of Americans are able to live out normal lives in spite of their disability because of it. Anyone can apply for the program, and those that have a real need and can prove that they both have a disability, and that the disability keeps them from maintaining regular employment, will quality for the government check.

Many people assume that the disability that is required by the government has to be a physical disability, such as the loss of the ability to walk or use of the hands. However, this is not the case, and many people quality for SSI Disability based upon a mental disability that they have including problems with speech, motor skills, a learning disability, or psychological problems that make holding a job difficult like bipolar disorder.

Also, be aware that qualifying for disability does not have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. For instance, if you have a partial disability, a disability that makes it more difficult for you to do your job, rather than one that completely eliminates it, then you may quality for supplemental SSI disability pay, to make up for the work that you are missing out on.

In order to know whether you qualify for this program, you must first honestly evaluate your situation and determine if your disability affects your ability to work. If so, then you can move onto the next step in the process.

You next need to find out exactly what will be required in order to apply for disability. You can usually get information on this from the local Social Security office, on what sort of things that they will require from you in order to make your application.

You should also be aware that it will most likely be required that you have been under the care of a physician for your disability, and the government may require proof of that, usually in the form of medical records. The Social Security Office should be able to tell you how to submit these records to them.

Whatever your particular disability, be aware that you may not get approved the first time that you apply. In fact, it may take two or three completely different application processes to get approved for SSI Disability.
