Type 2 Diabetes - Weight Loss and Blood Sugar Control

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 162

Being overweight or obese most definitely increases your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, and also makes control of the condition much more difficult. Fat acts as a gland that can make cells resistant to insulin, and insulin resistance is the cause of Type 2 diabetes. Not surprisingly, losing fat can help you with blood sugar control.

In a study published in the journal Diabetes Education in April 2012, researchers looked at weight loss and the lowering of HbA1c levels in 72 people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Their average HbA1c level was 8.6 per cent at the beginning of the study. They were given a plan designed for weight loss and lost an average of 10.7 kg. Diabetics who lost:

  • 5 kg reduced their HbA1c by 0.5 per cent, and those who
  • reduced their weight by 12.2 kg also showed a reduction in HbA1c of 1.0 per cent, and those who
  • lost 15.9 kg reduced their HbA1c by 10.3 per cent.

From these results it was concluded for every 10 per cent of body mass lost, the HbA1c level was reduced by.81 per cent.

Keeping your HbA1c levels under control has important implications for preventing heart and blood vessel disease, according to a report published in the journal Diabetolgia in March 2012. Investigators at the George Institute for Global Health in Sydney, Australia, looked at the relationship between HbA1c levels and heart and blood vessel disease in 11,140 diabetics. For those diabetics who had HbA1c levels above 7.0 per cent the risk of a heart attack or stroke went up 38 per cent...

  • for people without diabetes, 4 to 6 per cent is considered a normal HbA1c level
  • for diabetics, the usual goal is 7 per cent or lower.

In new cases of Type 2 diabetes, the HbA1c level should be checked every three months. Once the condition is under control, many doctors suggest the HbA1c level is checked twice a year. Tell your doctor if you take:

  • vitamin C or E supplements, or have a history of
  • anemia,
  • high cholesterol,
  • liver disease, or
  • kidney disease,

since those can affect your HbA1c test results.

As with blood sugar tests, HbA1c levels can also be carried out at home. The instrument to measure HbA1c is similar to a glucose meter...

  • AccuBaseA1c,
  • Medline A1c, and
  • A1cNow Self Check Blood Glucose Meter,

are available for measuring your HbA1c levels in a few drops of blood.

If your HbA1c level is above 7 percent, and you are overweight or obese, think about what per cent of body weight you would like to lose to watch your HbA1c levels go down.

How do you start to create a healthy lifestyle today so you can avoid high blood sugar levels and lose weight?

For nearly 25 years Beverleigh Piepers has searched for and found a number of secrets to help you build a healthy body.

The answer isn't in the endless volumes of available information but in yourself.
