Know About Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease characterized by high levels of sugar in the blood. Serious medical conditions can result from this condition such as pregnancy complications and premature death. While this disease can cause noticeable symptoms, many people have no symptoms. There are several different types of this disorder that can cause different symptoms.

Gestational diabetes is a condition that affects women during pregnancy. Women who have this condition generally require treatment to keep blood sugar levels steady. This condition is most common in African Americans, Hispanic Americans and American Indians. Women who are overweight at the time of pregnancy have a higher risk of developing this disorder. When uncontrolled, this condition can lead to serious complications for the infant immediately after birth. Women are typically tested around the fifth month of pregnancy for this condition. Those who suffer from this condition often go on to test positive for Type 2 within the next 5 to 10 years. Obstetricians may have pregnant women test their own blood sugar at home during their pregnancy, using diabetes test strips to be certain blood sugar levels are within normal limits.

Type 2 accounts for approximately 90 percent of all cases. This condition occurs with aging, obesity and in those who have a family history of this disease. This disorder can also be found in young children and teenagers, especially those who are overweight. People diagnosed with this disease do not require insulin, but control their blood sugar levels by eating a specific diet. Doctors recommend testing blood sugar levels daily with diabetic test strips to monitor blood sugar levels.

Type 1 occurs when the body's own immune system attacks and destroys pancreatic beta cells. These cells are solely responsible for producing insulin within the body, which regulates blood sugar. This disease is often diagnosed during early childhood, but it can be diagnosed later on in life as the disease progresses. Environmental factors, genetics and autoimmune disorders may predispose someone to this disease. This disease is responsible for approximately 10 percent of all diagnosed cases. Patients, who are found to have this disease, must keep a variety of diabetic testing supplies on hand to be sure blood sugar levels do not raise. These may include diabetic testing strips and electronic devices that test levels of sugar in the blood.

In some people, this disease causes specific symptoms that are bothersome. A gestational condition typically does not produce symptoms and is most often diagnosed through routine obstetric testing. Type 2 can cause blurry vision, repeated infections, numbness in hands and feet, frequent urination, weight loss, severe fatigue, irritability, slow wound healing and increased thirst. Type 1 may cause frequent urination, increased thirst, weight loss, unusual hunger, fatigue and irritability. Since uncontrolled disease can cause serious complications, anyone who experiences these symptoms should consult their doctor for screening.
