Cure for Type 1 Diabetes Is One Step Closer

Several diabetes research foundations have joined forces to find the reasons and cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Specialist of the field fast-tract the evaluated research ideas from different labs all over the globe and test them in clinical ways. Together their effort is shortening the path to cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Medical congresses are the wonderful place to share the latest researches with clinical trial results. Research companies with their funders try to attend medical congresses to gain attention and to share their research.

Juvenile Diabetes Research foundation (JDRF) signed a research agreement with Eli Lilly Company (LLY) to accelerate the speed of progress in all the key priority areas. The foundation will fund the early- stage research. The whole research is based on the study to regenerate insulin-producing cells in these patients having Type 1 Diabetes.

"The goal of this research agreement is to understand how selected cells can be reprogrammed in order to convert them into insulin-producing cells in the body," said Philip Larsen, M.D., Ph.D., chief scientific officer for diabetes drug discovery at Lilly.

These types of research collaboration with funders will foster a new era of collaboration between organizations. The main goal of such collaboration is to speed up the research process and to evaluate better results for improving the lives of Type 1 Diabetes patients.

"This research is an example of regenerative medicine, a new frontier in science that replaces or regenerates new cells, tissues or organs, and while this particular research is early stage, it may ultimately lead to new approaches to treating Type 1 Diabetes." said Philip Larsen, M.D., Ph.D., chief scientific officer for diabetes drug discovery at Lilly.

This disease is caused by the autoimmune destruction of beta cells of the pancreas. Pancreatic Beta cells produce insulin according to the requirements of the body. Type 1 Diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent, juvenile or childhood-onset) is characterized by deficient insulin production and requires daily administration of insulin. The cause of Type1 Diabetes is not known and it is not preventable with current knowledge ( WHO).

According to a report presented by JDRF, in America, almost three million people have any level of Type 1 Diabetes. People having this disease need insulin as a treatment. One research study regarding insulin treatments for Type 1 Diabetes focuses on restoring insulin production normally by regeneration of pancreatic beta cells. This research was shared in all medical congresses to get expertise opinions. The regeneration of beta cells is by stimulation of already alive beta cells or by reprogramming for creating new cells. Reprogramming is triggered by converting one cell type to another. These are huge scientific researches.

JDRF is a well known and a reputable worldwide foundation for research to cure juvenile diabetes. It's the leader in setting the global agenda of all medical congresses for diabetes research. It is the largest funder of all researches in the field of diabetic medicine. The main goal of the foundation is to discover a cure for juvenile diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes can be fatal and can affect children and adults. At present people with Type 1 Diabetes has to check their blood sugar regularly and they need to inject insulin themselves. Insulin is not a cure for diabetes; it is just to prevent the person from sudden onset symptoms of high glucose level. Insulin even does not help in preventing the person from potential complication of diabetes like blindness, kidney dysfunctions, heart diseases and stroke.

JDRF is one of the major organizers of medical congresses on diabetes and support all researches and education on the topic.
