Symptoms of Dyslexia - Factors That You Should Be Aware Of

Dyslexia is a learning disability that hinders a person the ability from reading, spelling words, the basic skill of writing, and in some instances, speaking. Dyslexia has been recorded for a very long time but was recognized and studied just very recently. The common symptoms of dyslexia are difficulty in accurately recognizing words. A dyslexic people also spell poorly and therefore low decoding abilities. The most consistent thing about dyslexics is their inconsistency. The character and ability of a dyslexic person may vary from day-to-day or from minute-to-minute.

Symptoms of dyslexia often go undetected until child starts schooling. A dyslexic child often feels anxiety and frustration especially when the inability to their basic academic skills has manifested. The severity of exhibited symptoms of dyslexia may differ from one person to person. A dyslexic person will also carry out this inability for the rest of his or her life.

The primary responsibility of understanding the symptoms of dyslexia lies in the parent. The parent should be able to understand Dyslexia very well. While the inability cannot be prevented, the symptoms of dyslexia can be recognized and therefore can be treated.

If the symptoms of dyslexia gone undetected in a child, the inability in learning to write and read lead to child's frustration and may aggravate other school-related issues especially on character, behavior and discipline issues. Therefore, a parent should begin the treatment to symptoms as early as they can.

The common symptoms of dyslexia may include the following trait or behavior.

1. Plays bright, highly intelligent, and articulate but unable to read, write, or spell at grade level.

2. Oftentimes perceived to be lazy, dumb, careless, immature, "not trying hard enough," or having a "behavior problem."

3. High in IQ, but not tested well in academics; it can be manifested orally, but not written.

4. Feels dumb; has poor self-esteem; hides or covers up weaknesses with ingenious compensatory strategies; easily frustrated and emotional about school reading or testing.

5. Oftentimes, talented in art, drama, music, sports, mechanics, story-telling, sales, business, designing, building, or engineering.

6. Daydreams often

8. Either hyperactive or laid-back daydreamer

9. Learns best through hands-on experience, demonstrations, experimentation, observation, and visual aids.

While dyslexic persons have innate inability to basic learning skills, they are very creative, intuitive and are very good at hands on learning. Various treatment options have been used up to manage and treat a dyslexic child at early level of a child in school and ensure that the inability will be hardly manifested in school. The key point is to develop the other skills and talent of a dyslexic child thereby raising the child's self-esteem and confidence. Always work on the premise that the disability needs special attention. Dyslexia is not a disease that is curable.

Dyslexia is a common learning disorder. There is a process of screening and assessment by which the symptoms of dyslexia can be detected. The initial screening of a child may be done by an informed parent. If you think your child shows any of these symptoms, seek the help of a qualified psychologist for proper medical attention.
