3 Top Towns in Puglia

April 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 104

Arguably Italy's most under-explored region, the 'boot heel' of the country is famous for its warming rustic food, near-empty beaches and unspoilt landscapes, and makes a wonderful location for holiday makers who want to discover something new. For a well-rounded experience, there are a few key essentials to put on your checklist for a stay in Puglia: villa with pool, comprehensive guidebook and map, a car, and a little bit of knowledge about what to see and do. You may want to research the best beaches, look into country drives or walks, and read up on towns and villages. With that in mind, here are some of the urban centres that you won't want to miss, for that quintessential Puglia experience.

Lovely Lecce

To get a real feel for the life of a region, its major cities are always a good bet, and the 'Florence of the South' is no exception. There's plenty to do in Lecce, so, comfortable as it may be, it's worth rousing yourself from your Puglia villa with pool amenities and making a full day of it. The splendour of the city centre's white and gold stone buildings, the lively markets and chic boutiques, and the baroque architecture of the churches with their madcap gargoyles all make this a fabulous city to explore. Points of interest include the gladiatorial Amphitheatre, the Duomo, the papier mache workshops and the verdant Parco Communale - and then there are the restaurants, cafes, and gelato sellers to be found around every corner.

Brindisi

A smaller city than Lecce, but still well worth an excursion from your Puglia villa with pool facilities, Brindisi has the distinct feel of a port town, with a pleasant, colourful seafront. It will appeal to those with an interest in Roman history, as it was the end of the Via Appia - the Roman Road - along which traders, pilgrims and legionnaires all travelled towards Greece and further east. Take advantage of the location and enjoy some of the fresh seafood on offer, relax on one of the local beaches, or wander along the seafront promenade. Castles, churches, and Roman ruins add to the city's interest and charm, while nature-lovers will appreciate the existence of several reserves nearby.

Alberobello

Those seeking something uniquely Pugliese should make a point of visiting Alberobello, in the province of Bari. A small, quiet town, it has earned the status of a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its fairy tale-like rows of trulli - small dry-stone houses with conical slate roofs designed to be readily dismantled, in order to avoid housing tax. Despite being a tourist destination, Alberobello is pleasantly un-crowded, and can be comfortably explored in an afternoon. If you have booked into a nearby Puglia villa with pool facilities, the drive back home will be well worth the rewards!
