How to Battle Depression

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 178

It is perfectly normal to have good days and bad days, "feeling depressed" from time to time is something we all go through. However staying depressed for long periods of time is not normal and in most cases requires treatment from a physician or psychotherapist. In this article I will discuss my personal experiences with depression and give tips on how to battle depression.

Physical posture and health

Our bodies play a huge role in the way we feel mentally and emotionally, so practicing good posture while both sitting and standing can be helpful in maintaining energy flow in the body. Smiling can also have positive impact on mental health because others react based on how they are received, positive interactions with people is a great release. So both energy flow and interacting with others can have a direct impact on your mood, often times people stay depressed as they don't do anything different.

Music and positive affirmations

No matter what your taste in music you can always use music to lift you up, personally I like to listen to inspirational music whenever I am feeling down. I have struggled with depression for many years and what I've learned is that medication isn't enough. You have to encourage yourself and continuously feel your mind with positive affirmations about yourself and about life.

Physical activity and meditation

One of my favorite remedies is exercise, some people don't even attempt to use physical activity as a way to treat depression. However in my experience is extremely effective and it has the fastest response time, there is no feeling like the "runners high". Meditation allows you take time to yourself including your mind, you shouldn't feel guilty about needing time to yourself. I always tell people, "the best thing I ever did for myself is be by myself", it's important to get to know who you are.

The truth about depression is that it starts in your mind and a few strengthening your mind you will be more equipped to effectively battle depression. Some people don't recognize it as an actual illness but myself and anyone else who has battled with this thing know that it is very real. Medication is not enough and learning more about what you can do to maintain your mental health, will only empower you.

In conclusion, anyone who suggests that depression is easy to overcome probably isn't being truthful. This will be an on going battle but you can beat it if you are willing to do what it takes. If you or anyone else in your family is struggling with this know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
