Easy Temporary Bad Breath Remedies

Having bad breath can be embarrassing but there are easy remedies. The key is to maintain good oral health to reduce the chances of having halitosis or bad breath. Bacteria build up at the back of the tongue and in between the teeth are usually the main culprits. Some common causes of it are gum disease, the type of food eaten, smoking, a sinus condition, dry mouth, and some medical conditions.

There are temporary bad breath remedies that can be used to fix bad breath while a person determines if there are long term remedies needed. Some remedies are simple and easy to do.

Drink a lot of water or sugar-free beverages that can keep the mouth moist and clean. As soon as the mouth feels dry, drink more water. Try swooshing some water around the mouth for around 20 seconds to help loosen food particles where bacteria can breed.

Regularly brush teeth and include the tongue and floss when cleaning the mouth and teeth. The tongue has hair-like projections that can hold plaque and small particles of the food eaten. The gathered particles can cause breath odor. When brushing, the top of the tongue just needs to be gently swept so there is no food particles left where bacteria can cause bad odor of breath.

After brushing use a bacteria killing mouth rinse to wash off more germs from the mouth. Or create a homemade gargle by mixing extracts of calendula, sage, and myrrh gum in equal proportions. Gargling for around 30 seconds at least four times a day can help prevent bacteria build up. When brushing is not possible, a person can use a mouth rinse. Another mixture that can be used as a mouthwash is a mixture of 50% hydrogen peroxide added to 50% water.

Chewing sugarless gum or a mint can also help remove it temporarily by stimulating the saliva to wash away the bacteria building up on teeth and gums. Sugarless candies, a mouthwash, and a mint or gum are just short remedies for an immediate fix.

Herbs and some common spices in the kitchen are good natural breath enhancers. Chewing on some fennel, cloves, or anise seeds, or parsley after a meal can be a breath saver and deodorizer. Tossing a few handfuls of parsley and adding some watercress in a juicer can also be used to refresh the breath.

It is best to avoid drinking caffeinated beverages, coffee, wine, beer, or whiskey since these drinks leave a residue that attach to plaque in the mouth and go into the digestive system. These drinks can also make the mouth dry.

If bad breath is observed to stay for more than a day, it is best to visit a dentist or doctor. Having bad breath can be a sign of an undiagnosed disease, or medical problem.
