4 Tips for Getting Out of Debt

June 15, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 127

How many of you out there are working and tired of being in debt? Okay, I see at lot of hands going up. Next question: how many of you out there are willing to step out of your comfort zone and do something radical in order to get out of debt? Okay, some hands went down but not many. Let's see what happens on this next question. How many of you out there are willing to stop using your credit cards in order to get out of debt? Uh-huh; I see many hands went down. Why is that?

Ever since the 1920's, this country's citizens have had the opportunity to enjoy the advantages of borrowing money through a personal line of credit. For a certain amount of interest on top of the original debt to be repaid, you can enjoy the benefits of buying those things that you would not normally be able to buy, those things that seemed far out of reach. Unfortunately, this craze has produced a condition to which many people are having difficulty extracting themselves from without destroying their lives in the process. Too many people owe more money than they make and they don't know what to do. If you are someone who has too much credit card debt, then please recognize the fact that you have to do something different, otherwise nothing will change.

Einstein said,

You cannot solve a problem with the same level of thinking that created it.

Einstein also said,

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

To keep using your credit cards when you can't pay the bills, IS Insanity.

You have to change your way of thinking and relating to your debt in order to overcome it. Debt consolidation is only one piece of the answer. If your mindset and behaviors do not change, you WILL be back where you started or probably worse.

We have a mega-serious credit card consumption problem in this country that's fueled by the banking, advertising and media industries and it's time for it to end. There are some simple (notice I didn't say easy) steps that you can take to begin freeing yourself from the slavery of your credit cards and its accompanying debt. To do nothing is worse. Consider the following:

1. Figure out exactly what you owe. This, of course, is the most important step to take in the beginning and probably the most frightening. It can be an emotionally staggering blow to realize that you owe over $10,000 to debtors and you barely make enough every month to cover your most basic living expenses. Don't get stuck on how much you owe; once you get caught there, it will be difficult to get yourself loose. Stick to the facts; figure out the numbers and move on to the next step.

2. Start paying cash for what you need to buy. This means, essentially, that you have to stop using your credit cards. If you need to use one, get one that you have to pre-load to use, thus limiting what you can buy. If you cannot pay cash for it, you cannot afford it. Yes, it is an adjustment and no, it's not easy; been there, done that. However in the end, when every month you start to see the balance go down, down, down, you'll be glad you made the change.

3. Make a list of your skill sets. Most people don't realize what they have to offer until they see it written down on paper and plenty of people are willing to negotiate a great price if they don't have to do it themselves. Your skill sets can include almost anything (within reason): carpentry, book-keeping & accounting, quilt finisher, handy man or woman, bicycle repair, baker, painter, blogging, baby-sitter, care-giver relief, distant personal assistant, house-sitter, tutor... you get the idea. There are just too many (legal) opportunities out there to make extra cash to get out of debt and increase your quality of life. Get a friend to help you with your list; they can usually help us see things differently and identify things we don't notice. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and consider doing something you wouldn't normally do.

4. Make extra money by utilizing your skills and services on the side. This naturally follows number 3. I love to knit and crochet and revel in being very detailed about my final products. However, it never occurred to me that I could offer my skills as a finisher for other people's projects such as finishing a project, sewing seams and adding details that the original creator can't or doesn't want to do.

While these tips may seem overly simple in their approach and therefore easily dismissible, they are painless than most approaches and provide a win-win situation for you and the person to whom you are providing the service. The old paradigms of living and operating are fast disappearing and we all now have to adapt and create new ways of living that are supportive and provide opportunities to bring joy into our life.
