Body Essentials For Pole Dancing

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 159

Many of those who start pole dancing by themselves, using DVDs or books don't know some body essentials that help progress in pole dancing quickly. This article is dedicated to the body essentials every pole dancer should know.

It's all about posture, posture, posture, gorgeous posture. Here are some essentials that will help you look sensational on and off the pole.

1. When standing next to the pole, stand tall and elongate your spine. Imagine you are growing taller from the inside out. This is pretty easy to do but more challenging when moving in and out of your moves on the pole. Practice, practice, practice.

2. Pole dancing is great for your core. Did you know that your core is not just your abdominal? You core runs from your pelvic floor (between your legs) to the top of your neck. The main muscles you need to be aware of are your abdominal muscles (there are four layers!), your pelvic floor and your back and shoulder muscles.

3. Essential cues to make you stronger and more elegant on and off the pole are:

- Shoulder down and back - this basically means keep your shoulders away from your ears when you spin, transition and pull up on the pole.

- Keep your abdominal muscles drawn in - think about pulling your belly button toward your spine.

- Breathe! - I know this sounds simple but most of my students will hold their breath when trying something new, which just makes it even more challenging.

4. When walking around the pole without shoes on - walk on your tiptoes. It makes it easier for you to transition in and out of moves and gives you a great workout for your legs too! Keep your head up, eyes forward, smile and be proud. Release your inner goddess!

5. When moving into any spin, resist the urge to "jump" into the spin, focus on drawing your shoulders down and back, lifting up and floating effortlessly into each spin. Trust me, with practice this does get easier.

6. Listen to yourself when pole dancing, if you can hear your footsteps on the floor when you land or you make a "thudding" sound when you move in and out of moves on the pole - you are not using your upper body or core strength. Think light, think ballet dancer or ninja. Softly, elegantly, quietly is the way to go.
