How to Reduce One of the Most Common City Bike Failures and Improve Your Cycling Safety

June 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 182

Enjoying and making the most out of your bike ride is always in everybody's mind when you think of this great outdoor activity. Bike commuters rely on their bikes to work properly every day as their means of transport and weekend riders look forward all week to go for at least one good ride on their weekends. Proper maintenance is a must for any type of rider, however, certain bike failures are going to happen, but they can often be brought to a minimum. If you reduce one of the most common city bike failures and improve your cycling safety by following some simple measures, it may allow you to ride a lot longer, without down time.

1. Never allow your tire to go completely flat. Even if you are storing your city bike for the winter months, because bike weight alone may cause the rims to cut into the tires or cause reduced damage until you have to ride again.

2. Always check your tires for proper pressure. Under inflated tires may damage your rims if you hit a pothole or even cut your tires and cause an accident. Always examine the side walls for minor cuts before every ride.

3. If you have an older bike and never replaced the tires, check for cracking on the side walls. It could be time to replace them.

4. If you have inner tubes in your tires, consider having at least a spare one along with your repair kit. In many cases it is quicker and wiser to replace the inner tube. For double the price of a regular tube you can get a puncture resistant inner tube for extra safety.

5. When purchasing a new tire look for tires that are Kevlar reinforced or puncture resistant.

6. Consider using tire liners if you have inner tubes. They are a great added feature and can eliminate one of the most common city bike failures and improve your cycling safety.

7. Replace your tire when you notice a flat surface at the center of the tire (the area touching the ground) especially if threads or fabric have broken through.

8. While riding on the road, be extra careful with debris on bike lanes and cross roads, where they seem to accumulate.

All of these tips may prove to be valuable by eliminating a good amount of down time. If you are on a budget make changes in small increments. Some of these changes may save you time and money in the long run.

Good maintenance and applying cycling safety every time you ride your city bike generates ride confidence. Check out our site for this great outdoor activity!
