Google Maps Should Consider Mobile Mapping a Cyclists Ride Across the USA

June 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 199

Okay so, one thing I found of great service is Google maps and street views as I am planning a bicycle ride across the country. You see, I definitely wish to choose roads which have a good shoulder, and safety from the cars which will be whizzing by. Especially considering we live in an age of text messaging, and not all the drivers are aware of how dangerous that can be, especially for me if I'm riding along the shoulder on my bicycle. Therefore, the larger the margin for error for those drivers, the better the safety for me - let's talk about this for second shall we?

Not long ago, I was reading a story from one of the Nordic countries, and Google Earth and street view had put their cameras on a snowmobile, and they were riding up and down the slopes, and then allowing all that information on line for people to see. This is great for those who are involved in tourism, and wish to see the country side before they pay the money to buy the airline ticket to actually go there. Now then, one thing I did note is here in the United States Google maps has indeed made available Street view for bicycle paths in many cities.

Indeed, this is quite wonderful, but what if we could go one step further? What if we could take all the most common routes for cyclists who are trying to ride their bicycles coast-to-coast, along with all those tour rides where people are going as a group? If each one of those was online for all to see, more people would set the goal of riding their bicycle across the United States, and perhaps join a large group to do that. It would be promoting fitness, and a hedge against diabetes for those participants. In other words it's "in vogue" right now, and it certainly would be cool to have all that online.

How difficult might this be you ask? Well, as a hobbyist engineer, and a long-distance cyclist, I believe it is possible to mount all this on top of a very strong touring bike, in fact Trek makes such a bicycle which is only 35 pounds, and sturdy enough to hold a small pole with all of the cameras on top. Each night, that information can be downloaded onto the Internet as the crew stops in the hotel for the night. It wouldn't take long to get all the most popular long-distance bicycle routes completely available for mobile apps by Google.

Working with many of the bicycle clubs around the country which often have the local routes for hundred mile bike rides, and the most popular routes of all, we could get all of the bike routes, including all the bike paths completely finished. It may not even be a Herculean effort if it is broken down into small pieces, and it was made easy, with the right equipment and gear available to bicycle groups, and cross-country tour cyclist operators. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
