A Man on a Mission - Bontrager Started at the Bottom, and Rode His Bikes to the 'Top of the Hill'

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 194

Bontrager and his bikes

Bontrager was born in 1954 and it was obvious from the beginning, if it had two wheels, he could make it fly! He had not quite hit teens when he was taking the larger engines off lawnmowers and putting them on his mini bikes. He had already started building crotch rocket speed demons and set in motion his destiny to be the absolute master at designing bikes. Whether they had engines or not, he could find a way to get the most possible speed he could get out of them. It was what he did. It was all he did. It was all he wanted to do. Bontrager built bikes and it would not be long before the whole world would know it!

He began racing bikes in the Motocross circuit when he was only 15 years old. Racing Motocross was not cheap, so to pay for his racing, he worked on motorcycles on the side. It was not long before his work on motorcycles began getting more notoriety and attention, than his actual accolades on the track. By the time he was twenty years old, and for the next six or seven years, he was building, tuning as well as designing not only Motocross and road racing bikes, but he was even making his mark in drag racing bikes. For those few years, Bontrager's bikes were taking home national championships in Grand Prix, road racing and series production. Everyone who was anyone in the world of two wheel production bikes was sitting up and taking notice. They all wanted a piece of Bontrager and they all wanted him working exclusively for them.

Bontrager begins Building his Legacy

Before he was thirty, Bontrager had sealed his name in the world of anything called a 'cycle'. He designed rims for bikes that were lightweight, yet durable. These rims improved the handling and speed on the bikes that used them. Thus, his rims were the most sought after on the market and demand for them was through the roof. The other staple of the Bontrager trademark name was his frames. While in college in California, he realized that the frames on the current bikes could be dramatically improved by using a tried and true material that was not as popular as the aluminium everyone else was using, steel. Everyone thought he had lost his mind using steel, but Bontrager thought that it was not being used properly. So he began to create frames using base line steel with the only exception being the different welds. Success!

Bontrager built an empire on just two wheels. He was owner and president of the company bearing his name, Bontrager Cycles Inc, until 1995. He sold the company to Trek Components, yet still to this day, designs and develops parts at the company he began all those years ago, long before he could drive, Bontrager had already learned to fly.
