Phone Answering Services: Where Are They Located and Why

The technology for rerouting phone calls to a separate remote location where the call can be answered is relatively new. It was developed and patented in the late 70s and ever since then people have been left scratching their heads. Folks who had called a business or their doctors office only to have some man or woman with a strange foreign accent answer the phone to take a message, so it took a little bit of getting used to.

Today however, this types of phone answering business is pretty commonplace so folks know how they work. They know that the person who picks up the phone is a worker in some far-flung country, a country on the other side of the world in a different time zone. So when he or she is answering the phone at say 12 noon where you live, it's probably close to 12 midnight where they are.

It turns out that one country in particular is recognized as having the largest number of call answering services and that country is India. Go ahead and checked online yourself and you'll see that you'll have trouble finding many other countries that have this type of service operating out of it. So now the big question here, is what is it about India that has made it the hub for this type of service?

It turns out that it's not one thing in particular but rather several things that have drawn so many call service operators to its soil and the first one is that India has a large number of English speakers. Not just people who speak English but people who speak English well. India is a former British colony, so over the years prior to its independence learning English in India was seen as a ticket to a higher income.

The next reason for this one country in particular being a dominant player in this particular business genre is that labor is cheap in India. It's one of the most populated countries on the planet after China makes so it has a large labor pool of English speakers. Third World countries like India also don't have minimum wage laws like they do in Western countries, so call service operators that are often earn surprisingly low wages.

Then lastly Third World countries like India have little to no social welfare safety system for its citizens. This means no welfare and no food stamps, so people just don't have the option of going on the dole like they can in countries like Canada, the US, UK, Sweden, Germany and all the others. So in places were call answering services are located the general rule is that if a person doesn't work, they don't eat.
