Disaster Cruise Stories

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 150

Every year millions of people prepare to take a vacation upon a cruise ship. Cruise ships sail all over the world and give their passengers a chance to experience a new place every day without having to change their central location. However, we have all seen the dangers that can occur when you are on these ships. Storms can hit without a moment's notice, people fall overboard, and in the rare occasion ships can sink. This article will look at a few of these incidents that have happened in the past. By understanding how these events can occur and by having the proper travel insurance, you can still enjoy these adventures knowing that you are prepared.

One of the first major cruise disasters that we have ever saw was the tragic events surrounding the Titanic. In April we will remember the anniversary of this ship that sank 100 years ago. The Titanic was one of the first ships of its time during this era. Everyone wanted to be a part of its maiden voyage. The cruise liner was sailing to New York City for its first voyage and there was a lot of pressure for everything to run smoothly. On the night of April 14th, 1912 that all changed. While traveling at night, the cruise line hit an iceberg. Many did not think much about it for this was supposed to be an "unsinkable ship". Of the over 3000 passengers and crew, only 705 passengers would survive. Many died in the flooding of the ship, impact of the ship sinking, or from the freezing water conditions.

More recently, we have seen another cruise liner sink from events that could have also been avoided. On January 13, 2012 the Costa Concordia struck a rock and capsized off the coast of Italy. Many are still reported missing and at least 12 people have officially been declared dead. Though technology advances have made this accident less disastrous in terms of death than Titanic, the events could have still been avoided. It is rumored that the reason the ship hit the rocks is because the Captain wanted to waive to the people on the Giglio Island.

Another alarming thing that concern passengers when on a ship is when people disappear. In the last several years more than 165 people have been reported missing from their cruise ships. Often times the story is that they simply fell over and that their bodies have been unable to be recovered.

Though these stories are disheartening and often times frightening, it is important to understand the importance of practicing safety precautions when on vacation. Obviously you cannot control anyone else's actions but your own, but that is why it is important to have travel insurance. This insurance will protect you if there is a storm or any other disaster. It can be hard to think that these things can happen to you or your family. However, if you do the right planning you will be able to rest easy knowing that you have done all that you can do to protect yourself. Travel insurance may seem unnecessary but you never know when you will need it.
