Choosing a Galapagos Cruise

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 207

The Galapagos Islands is a particularly special South America travel destination. With the incredible diversity of flora and fauna, including some of the rarest species in the world, the sheer number of islands, and the overwhelming quantity of cruises, it can be difficult to organize everything to make this dream Galapagos vacation come true. For travelers interested in cruising from island to island, there are three major categories of options: cruise ships, sailing boats, and yachts.

Cruise ships can hold the largest number of passengers at one. Large ships such as Galapagos Legend and Santa Cruz host between 90 and 120 passengers. They also have options for 3, 4, or 7 night tours. Specific itineraries vary, but a typical tour on the M/V Santa Cruz stops at San Cristobal, Espanola, Floreana, Fernandina, Isabela, Baltra, and North Seymour islands, as well as various others. This type of ship also features expert crews, extensive meal menus, and multilingual guides, as well as amenities possible only on larger ships, such as bar, Jacuzzi, lounge, and sun deck. On these large cruise ships, there is more opportunity to meet different types of people, however, there may be less flexibility in a tour schedule and choosing specific sites to see.

Sailing boats are a smaller alternative to Galapagos cruise ships. Boats such as Cachalote and Nemo feature 8 day itineraries, take 10 to 20 passengers, and are around the same price as large cruise ships. A boat like Cachalote is 96-feet long, boasts 3 wooden viewing decks, and with 16 passengers allows for a more intimate experience on your Galapagos tour. Cabins have private baths as well as hot water and individually controlled air. These boats are ideal for families or small groups of friends as well as diving enthusiasts.

Another option for Galapagos island hoping are yachts or catamarans which can be small or mid-sized depending on your needs and interests. Galapagos yachts offer the widest range of itinerary options, from 2 to 11 nights, and are ideal for travelers seeking the utmost level of privacy and comfort on a Galapagos vacation. These boats also have faster cruising speeds, resulting in less time cruising, and more time enjoying the natural wonders of the Galapagos, be it going on shore to see land critters or snorkeling with the creatures of the sea. Examples of mid-size yachts are Coral and Angelito, while small yachts include Montserrat, Aida Maria, and the Galapagos Journey I.

In addition to your budget, your ultimate decision for a Galapagos cruise depends on the size of the vessel you want to cruise, the number of co-passengers you will be comfortable with, your interest in the type of wildlife you want to see.
