All About Muslim Matrimony Customs and Traditions in Delhi

Islam has the largest population of followers in the world. The advent of Islam in India was around 12th century. A considerable population of Indians across the length and breadth of the country embraced Islam. Tracing India's history, a significant period was ruled by Muslims rulers and kings. The ruling Muslims left a deep impact on the culture and traditions of the country.

The Muslim population in India is spread in all parts of the country. Some of the most populous states with Muslim population are Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. The state of Delhi has good number of population following the Islamic faith. The Muslim Matrimony in Delhi strictly follows the traditional rules and customs according to Islamic faith.

Situated on the banks of river Yamuna, the state of Delhi is one of the most visited regions in India. The capital of India, Delhi along with neighboring cities of Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Greater Noida is the melting pot of politics, commerce and cultural activities in India. The state of Delhi has a cosmopolitan society with diverse communities living in harmony. Apart from the Muslim community, other major communities residing here are Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Christian and Baha'i. There are minority community settled like the Parsi, Buddhist, Jewish and Anglo-Indians.

The Muslims in Delhi are settled in all parts of the state. The northern part of the city, popularly known as Old Delhi has large concentration of Muslim population. This place was planned by the Mughal rule Shahjahan in the year 1639. According to history, all the major dynasties ruling from 1206 to 1526 are Muslims. Central Delhi and North East Delhi have more Muslim families settled.

The cuisine served in Muslim Matrimony functions for the Delhi state serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine. The influence of Mughlai cuisine is common in the food served at the various Muslim matrimony functions. Some common food items served at the Delhi Muslim weddings are Butter Chicken, Tandoori Chicken, Mutton Biryani, Korma and Nahari. A variety of Kababs like Shami Kabab and Seekh kabab is served at the wedding functions. Tasty snacks are also served like the famous Delhi's Aaloo chaat and tikki chaat. Along with the main course, the Muslim weddings in Delhi also serve a range of accompaniments. Desserts like Kaju Barfi, Gulabjamun, Kulfi, Falooda and Anjeer Halwa are all time favorites.

The followers of Islam are divided into two broad divisions-Shia and Sunni. Most of the Delhi Muslims come under the Sunni group. The Sunni Muslim also known as Sunnites or Sunnis strictly believes in the actions and sayings of Prophet. The Muslims in Delhi belong to various castes like Kunjra, Malik, Pathan, Ansari, Syed, Dhobi, Shaikhzada, Churihara and Khanzada. The Muslim Matrimony in Delhi goes in accordance with the rituals and customs mentioned in the holy book. The Muslim wedding rituals starts several days before the actual day of marriage. The main matrimonial ceremony of the Muslims is known as Nikaah. According to custom, the bride and the groom has to sign a contract of marriage known as Nikaahnama. The marriage contract is signed in presence of witnesses, which are usually father of the bride and the groom. A qazi presides of the entire Nikaah ceremony. The 'nikaahnama' also mentions the amount of dowry that the groom promises to give the bride.

Muslim Matrimony functions in Delhi are a grand one. The Muslim bride generally wears traditional Indian attire, which is a lehenga. She also complements her bridal look with gold jewelry and glass bangles. The groom on the wedding day wears traditional wedding sherwani.
