EMT IV Equipment: The Value of a Portable IV Warmer

June 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

IV fluid warmers have existed for decades, but only recently were they designed for portable use. Portable EMT IV equipment is indispensable for treating injury victims. If a portable IV warmer is not a part of their fire and EMS supplies, paramedics can potentially worsen the condition of injury victims instead of improve it. To support the argument, below are reasons why paramedics should carry portable IV warmers:

Certain Populations are at Risk for Hypothermia

Because their bodies lack efficient temperature control, children and the elderly experience hypothermia more frequently than young adults and middle-aged persons. When a child or an elderly person experiences an injury that causes hypothermia, addressing the hypothermia immediately may be necessary to keep it from spiraling out of control and causing a fatality.

Cold Infusions Decrease Body Temperature

A list of the causes of hypothermia commonly includes exposure to cold temperatures, brain and spinal cord injuries, excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, and blood loss. Cold IV infusions are a less frequently mentioned cause of hypothermia is a. Yet, these infusions remain a leading cause of hypothermia in injury victims. In 2010, almost no pre-hospital EMS infusions were delivered warm, causing perhaps millions of injury victims to arrive in the emergency room in a state of hypothermia.

Numerous Types of Injuries Cause Decreased Body Temperature

Hypothermia results from various types of injuries, including spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and lacerations. It can also result from a drug overdose and exposure to the elements. These conditions are commonly seen in injury victims. In a non-hospital environment, using a portable IV warmer from an EMT IV equipment kit is the best way to address the hypothermia that these conditions cause.

Hypothermia Complicates Emergency Care

Emergency crews that lack a portable IV warmer in their fire and EMS supplies administer cold IV infusions that cause hypothermia. When injury victims who need emergency surgery arrive in the emergency room suffering from hypothermia, the hypothermia can complicate surgery for two reasons: anesthetic can make the hypothermia worse, and so can the loss of body heat that results from surgical incisions and open body cavities. Treating injury victims with warm IV fluids as they travel to the hospital helps prevent this complication.

Hypothermia Complicates Recovery from Surgery

As mentioned above, surgical anesthetic and the loss of body heat during surgery can cause hypothermia. When hypothermia persists after surgery, it can complicate recovery by increasing the patient's chances of contracting a hospital-acquired infection. When core body temperature falls below 95°F, the immune systems functions less efficiently, making it easier for infections to develop in surgical incisions. Administering warm IV fluids during surgery helps prevent this from happening.

Conclusion

A portable IV warmer is a critical piece of EMT IV equipment. Without it, paramedics predispose injury victims to hypothermia when they administer cold infusions. As the points above demonstrate, hypothermia poses a significant complication to the treatment of many types of injury victims. To help eliminate this complication, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) should make portable IV warmers a mandatory component of fire and EMS supplies for paramedics

A portable IV warmer is one of the most important fire and EMS supplies for treating injury victims. It can be purchased from a supplier of EMT IV equipment.
