Why Do People Need to Use Close Protection?

February 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

Close protection officers and other security professionals play a vital role in protecting not only famous figures and those in the public eye but also members of the public who may have aggressive or dangerous situations to face where it would be lethal to do so alone. This article explores the role and functions of security professionals.

The main role of a close protection officer or body guard is primarily to protect. The people who enlist these services are usually rich and famous or have some political influence. They are usually protecting from the threat of assault of kidnapping or sometimes more seriously assassination. If one of their charges was threatened with a shooting then it would be the responsibility of the body guard or close protection officer to take that bullet for them. The people most likely to be under threat are those who are in possession of sensitive information that could provoke a terror attack and also those who are vastly wealthy. Sometimes it is necessary to employ more than one person and it is quite common to find that especially celebrities, having a whole team of close protection.

However, close protection is not just for the rich and famous. Those who feel threatened or fear for theirs and their family's safety can have a body guard. A body guard could be protecting someone from an abusive relationship. There is however, one thing all the people who use body guards have in common and that is protection.

The security and close protection world is not always portrayed in a positive light. Sometimes the lines between fantasy and reality can become blurred and people think that body guards are similar to those that they see in the media which is just not true, these portrayals have been overly glamorised for the big screen. This is not the case and it does not involve all the guns and drugs that are seen in films. Their main role includes planning safe routes for their charges, avoiding places where there is going to be a lot of people which could pose a safety risk.

This information is just a general break down of the role of a close protection officer is a very specialised one and depending on the job their main tasks will vary greatly. It is usually the case the most close protection operatives are expected to drive around and escort their clients however, there are specialist branches which involve weaponry and sophisticated technology. No matter what sector of the industry you are working in, there is no dispute that it is an incredibly rewarding and exciting job.

The author of this article has an interest in this subject and had relevant experience of close protection professionals so is in a good position to comment but can also see both sides of the story as security operatives are not always portrayed in a positive light.
