Protecting Yourself Against Sexual Offenders

February 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 137

One of the major reasons why it's difficult to identify potential sexual offenders is that sexual offenders can be anyone. Reports of rape and sexual abuse committed by a victim's close friend, uncle, cousin or even his/her own father are no longer surprising these days. In fact, reports of such disgusting crimes are, sad to say, common "segments" in most evening news.

No matter where you are - whatever state, city, town, county or neighborhood you're in, it's imperative that you always be vigilant and wary of the people around you. It's extremely difficult to figure out who you can trust these days and who you should stay away from. Sexual offenders usually target women and children - people who don't have the ability to defend and protect themselves. Most sexual offenders are maniacs that won't respond to treatment. Even some experts of criminal justice and human rights believe that sexual offenders should be incarcerated and contained.

Nevertheless, the main problem still lies with the appearance of sexual offenders. Offenders appear just like anyone else and they prey on those who appear to be clueless and innocent. In order to remain safe against sexual offenders, it's important that you know how to protect yourself and your children from those people around you. There are hundreds and thousands of sexual predators scattered in the United States, Canada and elsewhere. Hence, you should learn to trust your instincts.

If you're alone with someone and you feel uncomfortable, don't hesitate to act. Stay away from situations where you'll be vulnerable. Learn how to say no even to people you know or friends of friends or relatives. Keep in mind, if you don't feel comfortable, walk away. It's also essential that you understand the issues. Rape is not just forced sexual intercourse. Rape may take the form of touching or other malicious non-sex acts. Talk to your children and instruct them what to do in situations where they're being harassed or sexually abused.

Be a keen observer on people around you. Supposed you have a new neighbor, you can do a background check to find out if he/she has a record of sexual offense. Get to know your neighbors and organize neighborhood groups that take a close and vigilant watch against rape and sexual abuse. Conservative estimates reveal that 72% of released convicted sexual offenders repeat their crimes over and over again. For that matter, you must keep yourself safe by applying certain risk reduction measures.
