How to Keep Track of Your Credit Card Spending

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 156

Part of being fiscally responsible is preparing and following a well planned budget. Budgets allow for you to not only know where your money is being spent, it also gives you an idea of where you can save money. Budgets also allow you to plan for future large purchases with a well organized savings plan to reach the necessary goal to purchase those large items. The typical way people keep track of their spending is through the use of receipts and cancelled checks.

When using credit cards, keeping your receipts is one way that you can keep track of your spending and can be quite effective. Using charge cards also means that you receive a monthly statement that outlines all of your purchases and payments made in the last thirty days. This is a handy and convenient way to keep track of your spending. Many choose to use a credit card for all of their normal purchases and pay the entire amount off monthly because they get a monthly statement that helps them track their spending.

Once you receive your monthly statement, take the time to look over it and review it line by line. This is always a good practice to ensure accuracy but also during this time you can choose to group all your purchases into categories to make it easier to keep track of and also to recognize areas that may be askew from the budget plan you have mapped out. Using categories such as groceries, fuel, utilities, as well as others can help keep you well organized and easily recognize areas that need extra attention.

Another way to keep track of credit card purchases is to limit what you use the credit card for. Many use charge cards only for emergencies that may arise such as unexpected car or home repairs or unexpected illnesses or injuries that require expensive medical care. Others still only use them for larger purchases such as for furniture or expensive electronics. In either case, using them for that purpose and then completely paying them off before using them again is a great way to keep track of your credit card purchases.

Limiting the number of credit cards you possess and use is another useful tip to help you keep track of credit card spending. If you use more than one charge card for a variety of reasons, you may find it difficult to keep track of your spending and on which card you spent it on. This can mean the difference between interest rates or payment dates which can affect your budget and how you intend to make repayment.

With any well planned budget, it is important to keep track of your spending so that you can recognize problem areas or to simply ensure you are staying within budget. This is especially important with credit cards as you typically will not see the results of your spending until the next billing cycle.
