Should Coffee Shops Sell CD Ambience?

February 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 267

After retirement, I became an accidental writer of articles and e-books, and like many writers I enjoy sitting in a coffee shop, enjoying the ambience, and allowing the atmosphere to flow through my mind as I create some of my best works, and come up with original thoughts. Perhaps my mind is taking in conversations which I am overhearing, or perhaps participating in and running those ideas and concepts through my memory bank while the caffeine flows through my veins. For whatever reason, there seems to be something to this, and I'm not alone in thinking so.

Now then, as an observer of self and my surroundings, I had already inherently noticed this. But now many of my views, often contrary to popular belief have come to fruition and verification from outside sources. It turns out that there is an uptick of value sitting in a coffee shop doing one's work, even with all the distractions. Let's talk about this for second shall we?

There was an interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal on Saturday, February 25, 2012 on page 3 of the "Ideas Market Section" entitled; "Dial-Up the Buzz, Please," by Christopher Shea. The article stated that; "people who like to write in cafés are onto something, it seems: a moderate level of noise - the equivalent of the background buzz of conversation - prompts more creative thought, according to a study."

Interestingly enough, as a prolific online article writer I agree, and it may not be so good for editing and tedious detailed type writing, for instance if you're putting together a technical manuscript, or operations manual, but it is certainly better for coming up with new ideas, original thoughts, or creative work. The ambience does matter, and it will affect your creativity. The article also cited the actual study; "It Is Noise Always Bad? Exploring the Effects of Ambient Noise on Creative Cognition," which is to be published in the Journal of Consumer Research.

Now then, if all this is a fact, and since I do a lot of writing in the evening hours when the coffee shops perhaps are closed, or I am sitting naked or in my pajamas producing some of my best work, why can't I have the ambience from the coffee shop in the privacy of my own home?

Well, why not? If this truly works, then companies like Starbucks should produce a CD for people to play in their homes, which might make them feel as if they are sitting in the local coffee shop. If there truly is a benefit, bring it on, and let's bring it home. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
