Overcoming Fear of Failure

May 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 157

I first got interested in balloon sculpting creations when I attended a friend's birthday party. The host engaged a professional entertainer to entertain the kids with balloon sculptures and magic show. I am blown away by their creative balloon designs. I am so amazed by how fast they are able to design balloon in styles.

They created dogs, bears, bees, flowers, hats, octopus, swords, monkey, penguins, palm tree and many more, all of which fascinated the kids and brought smiles to adults.

I told myself that I have to add learning the art of balloon sculpting to my bucket list ( bucket list is the list of things I would like to do before I reached the end of my life).

I was delighted when I heard from my cousin there is a workshop and interest group conducting balloon sculpting, without hesitation, I enthusiastically signed up for the 2 hours workshop.

The day of the workshop finally came, I am so thrilled and excited as my close pal together with her 3 years old adorable daughter, signed up for the workshop.

We had fun making our first balloon creation, which was a simple small flower design. However, when it comes to the second butterfly design, I had difficulty in creating it. Half way through my design, my balloons burst twice and I realised I have to start from scratch and could not really catch up with the trainer and the other participants.

I was getting frustrated, embarrassed and disappointed. More than that, I was afraid that my balloon might burst again and all my effort will be wasted. I looked around, seeing other participants designing their balloons beautifully, I started to think, perhaps I am only good at creating small flowers and not creative or gifted enough to venture other designs. I broke into a cold sweat. I wanted to excuse myself and walk out of the room. What was wrong with me?

Have my enthusiasm burst just like the balloons?

My close pal taught me an important lesson that day, I noticed her balloon also burst, but she quickly, without hesitation, pick another new balloon and started all over again. She does not waste time feeling frustrated or comparing her speed with other participants. In no time, she was able to catch up with the rest.

Being kind and caring hearted as she always is, she helped me along the way, she sculpted a beautiful hat with fanciful design and presented it to me. It makes my day! However, the real lesson comes from knowing that one must never be afraid to try new things and possibly fail. Only by rising up each time we fall, will we experience breakthrough and learn new things about ourselves that allow us to reach new levels. Failure isn't final. What really matters is we must overcome the fear of failure and never, ever give up!

Since I love balloon sculpting, I have made a choice not to settle for only sculpting small flowers. It applies not only in balloon sculpting, I have decided that in life, I will give up all excuses, banish my fear of failure, stop worrying about what others think of me and just let my imagination create endless possibilities!
