KickStart Your Creativity

How many of you out there have started a creative project and then run out of money prior to completion? How many of you out there have creative ideas that never got off the ground because you didn't have the money to begin with?

I still remember my first trip to a recording studio. My songwriting partner and I were young and excited, and obviously didn't accurately determine how much time and money it would take us to record 11 songs. We ran out of money during the mix down and had to plead with family and friends to raise the money to get us to the finish line. And there were definitely short-cuts along the way, which we always looked back on with some regret.

The necessity of keeping a roof over your head, and occasionally eating a well-balanced meal, tend to take priority over the funding of creative projects. There was many times when I wished that I could find a wealthy patron who would say to me "I'll take care of all that stuff, you just concentrate on being creative". And then I would wake up, and get ready for another day of work. Not that there's anything WRONG with working mind you, but if you're a creative type, you would prefer working in your field.

In recent years there have been developments in what's referred to as "group or crowd" funding. And while this isn't the same thing as having that "wealthy patron" that I dreamed of, it may be the next best thing. As the name implies "group funding" is putting together large groups of individuals to finance creative projects. You can still ask for help from your family and friends, but this is a much better model. Recently "group funding" organizations have begun to rival the National Endowment for the Arts in terms of the amounts of money made available to artists for creative projects.

Among the leaders in "group funding" organizations is a company called KickStarter. At you can register at their site and submit your idea for a project that you want to have financed. After your project idea is reviewed and approved, you are then allowed to develop the details of your project. KickStarter allows you to determine the amount of money to be raised, the time frame for the campaign, and any rewards that you would like to offer to those who decide to contribute to your project. After your project is posted, visitors to the site decide if they would like to contribute to the funding of your project.

A friend of mine told me about KickStarter some time back, and my first thought was "that's a great ideal, but there's no way that anyone is going to help finance a recording project for me". But after I actually went and visited the website and saw the various projects that were receiving funding, it made the notion seem much more accessible. KickStarter helps to provide funding for a variety of creative projects: movies, game design, art, music, etc. The project must have a beginning and an end. It can't be an ongoing type deal.

You also have to realize that not every project gets funded. But this is a great opportunity for those of us who have ideas we would like to execute but find ourselves short on resources.
