Are You Thinking Too Far Outside the Box?

April 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 157

Being a disciplined thinker is probably one of the hardest things to master, particularly in the world today. We are constantly bombarded by bits and pieces of information that distract us from whatever we were thinking about the first place.

Think about the last time you did a work-related web search. You started off with the best of intentions, but the next thing you knew, you were reading an article about the three-headed cow in Peru or watching a video of the latest flash dance.

Distracted thinking is a real time killer. If the distracted thinking leads to distracted acts, you are in double trouble. The web search that you started resulted in you reading about something that really made you angry. Suddenly you are writing an angry comment in response to the article. Someone responds to your comment which makes you even madder. You respond to their comment. You look at the clock and an hour has gone by.

The internet, Facebook, Linkedin-all of these can be used as great tools in your business. You can communicate with people that you would normally never have access to, you can disseminate information to thousands with a click of your mouse. The downside is that they are also great places to become distracted.

Becoming disciplined in your thinking is a learned skill. Just like you learn to manage your time and your work day, you must master your thinking. Learn to take the time, away from distractions, to think in a disciplined and organized way. No radio or iPod next to you all the time.

Most of us spend very little time really thinking. We start off trying to think about something, but soon find our thoughts going off in a thousand different directions.

Find a quiet spot (and yes, even music can be a distraction), and start thinking about just one thing. One problem, one idea-it doesn't really matter, but just one thing. You may have to start off small, just thinking about one thing for only a few minutes. You should eventually increase your time until you stay on task for at least 30 minutes.

Some problems or ideas may take longer to think about than others, but you will never get anywhere if you can't learn to declutter your mind.

"A man should take away not only unnecessary acts, but also unnecessary thoughts, for thus superfluous acts will not follow after." Marcus Aurelius (121-180) Roman emperor
