Taking Care of Silver Jewelry

February 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 156

Tarnish on silver jewelry is caused by the interaction of silver jewelry with certain elements such as oxygen or sulfur as well as with certain acids. Storage for a long time causes silver tarnish. Skin contact can also cause tarnishing rubber (sulfur in rubber is a catalyst for tarnish) and also if you are taking any medication that changes the ph of your skin may cause silver to lose its luster.

Here are some useful tips to clean and store your jewelry

Traditional way Very often necklaces, rings, bracelets and other jewelry of pure silver, tend to lose that natural shine and become opaque, that is why today we will teach you how to clean silver jewelry in a very easily and economical way.

All you have to do is soak the silver in a mixture of 1/2 cup white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda for 2 or 3 hours, then proceed to rinse with cold water and complete drying thoroughly with a soft cloth and that´s it, your silver will shine again as before.

Silver jewelry cleaner liquid This cleaner comes in the package tray or sieve. Place the jewelry in the tray. Soak for 10 to 15 seconds. Finally rinsed in water with sodium bicarbonate and dried (preferably dryer). Important: Use this product only for silver, do not use precious or semiprecious stones, jewelry aging or any other metal.

Here are some other useful tips:

• Store your silver in a cool, dry place that is preferably airtight, to prevent oxidation.

• Do not expose the jewelry to corrosive as chlorine, fat, sweat, or perfume for long periods of time.

• Avoid direct exposure to artificial light or sunlight for long periods of time.

• Do not store silver jewelry directly on wood surfaces; this often contains acids that can affect the surface of silver.

• Do not stack the jewelry in a drawer. Some pieces can scratch another. Top each piece individually wrapped in a cloth and keep them separate.

• Store each item individually in its own soft pouch or in a separate compartment in your jewelry box.

• Clean the silver jewelry quite often to keep their luster and beauty. Do not use toothpaste as it is abrasive. All jewelry can be cleaned safely if immersed for ten minutes in warm soapy water (do not use detergent soap). It can be cleaned with a soft brush to remove dirt. Finally, dry the silver jewellery very well on absorbent cloth.
