Trading Pins and Lapel Pins: What's the Difference?

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 212

Trading pins and lapel pins often look similar, so telling the difference can pose a challenge. Determining the difference between them requires looking at more than just the physical design. The intent and purpose of the lapel pin should be taken into consideration as well as the design. There are some basic differences visually that should help narrow down what type it is.

Trading Pins Trading pins are designed to be collectors items and traded between individuals. Because of this, the type of materials used is restrictive. Most are in the soft enamel or die-struck style. They are also generally larger than a lapel pin since the purpose is to print a design or decorate it. They are usually at least 1 1/2 inches wide and can be found in sized up to 4 inches. Trading pins also make it possible to add ribbons, charms and other decorative elements such as spinners, sliders and blinkers because of their size.

Trading pins usually are created to commemorate anniversaries and celebrations, show support for a particular sports, academic or sports team and at martial arts events. Trading pins are often custom made for new teams. Teams must get in contact with a designer to talk about the design and create the pin. Fans love the pins and the teams pin helps others to become familiar with the team.

The most popular type are baseball trading pins. Each year, manufacturers create new items that are marketed to consumers on a mass scale. When customizing them, the more you can put on it, the more likely another team will want to trade with you. Highly customized and option filled pins provide the greatest value. The more you can put on it, the better the options are for trading.

Lapel Pins Lapel pins are smaller than trading pins. These usually goes on the collar or lapel of a suite. Lapels might be made out of cloisonne, off-set, soft enamel, or die struck style. Some lapel pins are also made out of gold, silver or nickel metals. They are smaller because they are intended to be elegant and subtle. Congressman and dignitaries are often seen sporting lapel pins in meetings and high-profile events. Lapel pins are used to encourage good grades, promote a service or product, identify members of a workforce or when fundraising.

People that choose to wear them may do so for ornamental, business or political reasons. Often times on holidays, people will don a Christmas tree pin for Christmas, or a bunny pin for Easter. Ornamental pins are used for parties, social events and even church meetings or a casual get-together. Business pins are worn by members of an organization to identify themselves as belonging to a particular company. Political lapel pins are often used to identify the political party and often either have the parties name, symbol or current political leader. They are usually inexpensive and can be distributed to a large number of people easily.

Pin Collecting Collectors enjoy collecting rare items. Both types provide the opportunity to latch on to a unique and hard to find item. As the creation of pins with cartoon characters and popular icons has become more common, people have begun to collect and trade for fun. Hobbyists scour the Internet and local trading shops to find pins they don't already own. Typically, a collector sticks to one particular style of pin, such as a Disney pin or a Star Trek pin. While these pins typically had little value, occasionally a trader can secure an extremely rare and popular item that sells for much greater than the initial purchase price. Trading can be a regular business for those that know how to track down and market rare pins.

Collecting trading pins and lapel pins can be fun for all ages. Visit trading pin zone for more information.
