Aids in Home Sewing a Fabric Canopy

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 209

The home sewing fabric should have enough body to drape gracefully. Printed fabrics must be lined, since canopies are viewed from the inside as well as the outside. Fabric yardage is contingent upon the canopy style and size of the bed. It is essential that the fittings and/or canopy frame are in place before determining the canopy's measurements. Four-poster or tester beds usually have a canopy frame attached to the bedposts; but any bed can be decorated to create the illusion of a four-poster by using ceiling frames and ceiling-mounted tracking.

Pole rods and crown-shaped structures can be used to suspend fabric over a bed to create the intimacy of a canopy without the four posts or canopy frame.

Plywood is used to build a frame if necessary. Bolt the frame to the ceiling over the bed, or hang from the ceiling with strong screw eyes or cup hooks. A half-tester frame can be cantilevered from the wall if the fabrics for the bed dressings are not too heavy.

Pole rods or dowels hold a variety of bed hangings. Decorative curtain poles with finial ends add to the decor. Attach the curtain poles to the ceiling or wall with brackets or cup hooks. If the rods are wooden, attach the home sewing fabric with a staple gun.

Ceiling mounted tracking is also used to hang bed dressings. Attach it to the ceiling all around the bed or just in the four corners. Tuck the dressing into the track so it hangs like draperies for an enclosed look, or tie it back with bows to simulate the look of a four-poster.

Brass chains or rings suspended from the ceiling allow the fabric to drape around and over the chains or rings for a less traditional bed dressing.

On the other hand, a tent-like canopy can be constructed without a canopy frame or bedposts. It is simple to sew, and can be added to any style bed with a minimal amount of construction. A curtain rod or decorative pole about 1 ½ ft to 2 ft. long is bolted or screwed into the wall above the bed, usually about 12 in. below the ceiling. Two other poles are affixed to the wall, one on either side of the bed at the desired height.

Linings add dimension and interest to the home-sewn canopy while providing an opportunity to introduce a reverse print, additional color, or sheer fabric. Fabric that is at least 54 in. wide is best. To determine the length of the fabric, measure from the pole to the floor; use a bed sheet to determine how much extra length is needed for a generous drape over the side poles.

A canopy suspended from a corona or coronet has a very ethereal and romantic feel. A corona can be made from any circular item that can be suspended from the ceiling; a wire or wicker basket, a painted hat box (or one covered with fabric) or even items found at a thrift shop. A corona is generally small in proportion to the bed, about 30 in. - 40 in. in diameter. It can be bolted directly to the ceiling or suspended from chains or screw eyes.

Fabric panels are attached to the corona to form the bed dressing, which falls gracefully down and around the bedposts. If the bed does not have posts, it is possible to hang decorative rings above the bed at all four corners and drape the fabric through the rings and straight down to the floor. Because the panels are unlined, sheer, lightweight home sewing fabrics work best.
