A Way to Glass Paint Superb Designs Onto Birthday Cards

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 217

In this guide to glass painting birthday cards, you will find out everything you that you require to start out in this trendy hobby. There are two different styles of glass paint - water based and non-water-based. Both have a wide choice of colours and are intermixable throughout their ranges.

When applying an outline, you can choose one of three different ways whilst glass-painting your birthday cards:

Glass-Paint Outline stickers - These are perfect for beginners to glass painting and are best applied on flat, even surfaces. Starting in one corner, slowly peel up the sticker, taking care not to stretch or distort it and apply it to the clean glass surface area of your birthday cards.

Glass paint outliner - These will give a fine outline and the outliner should be squeezed from a tube. They are available in a variety of colours. They can be applied as an outline for your design prior to paint being applied or piped over a pre-painted surface as fine detailing.

Leading Tape - Doors and windows usually necessitate this type of outliner.

Prior to starting to paint, ensure there are no specs of dust and grease on the glass area of the birthday cards, thereby ensuring good adherence. Make use of a solvent, such as white spirit or methylated spirit.

Because a birthday card has a flat surface, the design can be traced straight through. It is easier to work on a flat surface, so try to lay the birthday card on a horizontal surface.

To create a straight line with a glass paint outliner touch the nozzle onto a glass surface then applying a soft even pressure, lift the nozzle from the surface and stretch the out liner along in a straight line. Tap the nozzle down on the glass surface when you are finishing the line.

Whilst filling in areas in between outlines on the glass part of your birthday cards with a brush, apply paint liberally by peddling the paint or making use of a pipette. This should give a smooth, stained-glass look. To obtain a lighter colour paint, weaken with water for the water-based paints or gloss-varnish for the non-water based paints.

Paint should always be poured into a palette as opposed to straight from the jar. In order to prevent colours becoming dirty or diluted. Sponging is another way of applying glass paint, however birthday cards normally have smaller areas, whereas this technique is usually best for wider areas.

To finish, a coat of varnish can be a used to protect solvent based paints, which is available in either a matt or gloss finish. Gloss finish is usually most popular for birthday cards, although if you would like something distinctive, you might want to use matt varnish. The gloss varnish can be used as a colourless thinner to obtain pastel shades without affecting the transparency and depth of colour. The matt varnish offers a finish like frosted glass. Adding beads or sequins may be a nice final touch and should be added while the paint is wet. The damp paint will act as a glue. You can also add glitter by sprinkling it over the wet paint to offer your birthday cards that additional bit of shine.

Reminder: When adopting these techniques in conditions other than for your birthday cards, glass paint is supposed to be applied only for decorative items, the colours aren't dishwasher resistant. It can, on the other hand be shined by wiping with a moist flannel.
