Tummy Tuck Surgery - The Basics

April 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

Many people become disillusioned when they work hard to diet and exercise without losing the extra weight in the tummy area. If you get to the point where you have done all you can and the fat persists, you may be a candidate for abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck. This surgery will help to flatten your abdomen by getting rid of excess skin and fat, and it will tighten the muscles within your abdominal wall.

Tummy tuck surgery is not a minor procedure - you should understand the surgery and weigh all the facts before you decide to have it performed. If you have not yet exhausted other ways to lose belly fat, work through them before you determine to go ahead with surgery.

If you are in good health generally, you may be a prime candidate for a abdominoplasty. Men and women alike can benefit from the procedure. Don't confuse the surgery with liposuction, which is cosmetic surgery that removes fatty deposits. Some surgeons may do liposuction at the same time as a tummy tuck.

If you are a woman who has had multiple children, abdominoplasty will help you to tighten the muscles, and also to reduce the skin. Women or men may use this surgery if they used to be obese, and have lost weight but still have excessive fat or skin that hangs loosely.

Women who still plan to have children may opt to wait to have a tummy tuck until they are done adding to the family. This surgery tightens the vertical muscles, and pregnancies after the procedure can separate them.

Abdominoplasty may cause permanent scarring that is visible after the fact. If you don't want to deal with that, you may not want to have this procedure performed. When you consult with your surgeon, you can weigh all the factors in the decision.

Abdominoplasty can be short or long surgeries - it depends on how much fat and skin is being removed. Various factors will determine whether the surgery can be done out-patient, or whether you should have it done on an in-patient basis.

General anesthesia is used in a tummy tuck, and you'll need someone to take you home when the procedure is complete, if you have it done as an out-patient. Someone should be with you the first night after your surgery, as well. In the more radical tummy tuck procedure, your surgeon will cut the abdomen from one hip bone to the other, and this allows for the most correction. Then the muscle, tissue and skin can be contoured to give the best effect. You may have drainage tubes postoperatively, as well.

There is also a partial abdominoplasty, which is less invasive. If you have more fat below your navel, this procedure uses shorter incisions. It may also be done with the assistance of an endoscope, and may only take a couple hours.

You will experience swelling and pain after the surgery, and you may be prescribed a painkiller if you need one. Barring complications, you will heal fully. If you don't completely heal (as happens in a small minority of cases) a second surgery may be needed.
