Liposuction - How to Decide If Fat Removal Surgery Is Right for You

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

Carrying too much fat on your body can cause problems. It's not just the way you look, although that might be your first priority when looking at ways to get rid of it, but other associated health problems can manifest, and sometimes they creep up on you almost without you noticing.

Perhaps you just get out of breath a bit quicker when climbing stairs, or you are a yard or two slower when playing your favourite game of five a side football. In more serious cases you may have been diagnosed with type two diabetes, or your blood pressure is found to be too high.

Many people call the cosmetic surgery clinic first and book themselves in for liposuction. However Liposuction may not be the answer in every case. Before embarking on cosmetic surgery you need to assess your lifestyle and your weight loss and fat removal goals before taking the plunge.

The first consideration should be your primary objective. Ask yourself is the problem is just excess weight, gained from a bout of over indulgence?. Or is the problem excess fat, that no matter what you do, you just cannot shift it?.

From time to time we all indulge a little which means we put on excess weight. Holidays and Christmas are prime examples. If you feel that with a little diet and exercise you could get rid of that excess fat, would it be best to try this first before heading off to see the Plastic Surgeon?

Plastic Surgeons always assess your lifestyle when considering your suitability for liposuction. If your excess fat has been gained through a short period of over indulgence, then he is likely to suggest that you try a diet first.

If on the other hand you have battled with excess fat for some time, you could be a candidate for liposuction. Plastic Surgeons want to see some commitment from their Patients. They want to know that their Patients are going to eat healthily afterwards and ideally take some form of exercise. These Patients are ideal for liposucton because they carry on the good work of the Surgeon after the operation. Active, healthy people who present themselves to Plastic Surgeons for liposuction, usually have one or maybe two areas of stubborn fat that they want to get rid of. It is this group of Patients that most Plastic Surgeons like to see.

Liposuction is surgery. All surgery carries risks. The procedure should be taken seriously and not an extension of your beauty regime. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia, but smaller cases can be done under local anaesthetic, with or without sedation. Your Plastic Surgeon will want to reassure himself that you are fit and well enough to undergo a surgical procedure.

After liposuction you can expect to have bruising and swelling to the operated area. There are techniques available now such as vaser liposuction which break down fat in a more gentle manner, this results in less bruising and swelling than ordinary liposuction and a faster recovery. However you still have to prepare yourself for some discomfort afterwards and perhaps some time off work. Traditional liposuction may require you to take as much as two weeks off work. Procedures such as vaser will be much less, around two to three days.

There is a limit in terms of the amount of fat that can be removed at any one time. If you have excess fat in a number of areas then it may not be possible to remove all of the excess fat in one operation.

Before considering liposuction you need to think about the quality of your skin. Generally speaking the younger you are the better. This is because when we are young our skin has good elasticity. As we get older his elasticity decreases. If large volumes of fat are to be removed, from the tummy for example, then you may need a tummy tuck at a later stage to get rid of the excess skin.

Your Plastic Surgeon will be able to give you some indication as to the likely effect on your skin after the surgery. He will ask you to wear special support garments for a while after the surgery to help with skin retraction.

If you have very poor skin quality then you may not be suitable for liposuction. There is little point in getting rid of the fat and replacing it with another problem.

We cannot discuss ways of removing fat without discussing your diet. I am always asked if the fat can come back again after liposuction. Many people seem to think that it will not matter what they eat and drink afterwards, they will still keep the fat off. You will need to watch what you eat afterwards, or you will get fatter again. It is perhaps fair to say that after spending upwards of £ 2500 on liposuction, most people are motivated enough to make an effort with their diet afterwards. If however you binge on food and drink after surgery, you could undo the good work of the Plastic Surgeon.

In some cases, the weight gain and fat volume mean that liposuction cannot be considered at all, and in fact is the wrong surgery altogether. In many cases Patients are referred to specialist bariatric surgeons for other procedures such as gastric band surgery, gastric sleeve surgery, gastric balloon surgery or even gastric bypass surgery. These operations are chosen when you need to lose significant amounts of weight. Remember that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It is there just to remove excess fat and improve the contour of your body shape.

If you are thinking about having liposuction surgery, consider all of these factors and you will be well prepared for the consultation with the surgeon. If you are in doubt, consult your Doctor and seek his advice. He has your medical history in front of him so he will be able to point you in the right direction if you are unsure which way to go.
