Across the world, plastic surgery is seeing a boom in its popularity. The practice was once used only by rich people to beautify, enhance and rejuvenate their appearance, but nowadays most of us know someone who has had cosmetic or plastic surgery to have their abnormal body parts surgically transformed.

Also called aesthetic surgery, cosmetic surgery is a medical specialty concerned with the improvement and correction of a structural defect. Using the surgical and non-surgical methods, the procedure is done to remove a scar, birthmark, wrinkles and other signs of aging.

The cosmetic surgical procedures are done to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve appearance and self-esteem, rather than for medical reasons. Neck-lift, Face-lift, Breast-lift and Blepharoplasty are some cosmetic surgery procedures that render a more youthful and aesthetically-pleasing appearance.

Men and Women Plastic Surgery Surge

Cosmetic plastic surgery has become a rising trend among the female as well as male and teen population, still the fairer sex accounts for the majority of cosmetic procedures in the United States.

The statistics show that in the year 2009, a total of 9.5 million cosmetic procedures were carried out in the United States. Of the total procedures, women accounted for nearly 8.6 million cosmetic procedures (92 percent of total), while men had more than 750,000 procedures which equals to 8 percent of total.

Botox tops the list of five most popular elective plastic surgeries women getting in the US, followed by Breast Augmentation, Liposuction, Eyelid Surgery and Tummy Tuck.

Gone are the days when people believed aesthetic surgery is just for women. These days men too love to look more appealing, just like women, and for the purpose they are now increasingly having some form of cosmetic surgery done.

Men in America represent a rapidly expanding segment of the cosmetic surgery industry, increasingly opting for elective plastic surgeries like Botox, Laser Hair Removal, Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peel and Soft Tissue Fillers.

Apart from the above mentioned five procedures, Liposuction, Rhinoplasty and Gynecomastia surgeries are also the most sought after cosmetic surgical procedures among men.

Plastic surgeons in the United States also see a sharp spike in the number of young aesthetic-surgery patients, with children as young as five turning to plastic/cosmetic procedures aimed at augmentation or reduction of certain body and facial parts.

An estimated 75,000 people aged 13-19 went under the knife to enhance their appearance in 2009, and nearly 135,000 teens chose a non-surgical methods to have new, improved look, the statistics from American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show.
