Can Chin Implants Be Removed?

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 160

Chin Implants are used to augment or enlarge this area in patients who have a Microgenia which means small chin. The formal surgical name for the operation is called a Genioplasty. The Genioplasty is most commonly used in combination with a Rhinoplasty or "Nose Job' to balance the side view of the patient who has a large nose. This procedure is also used in Facelift to improve a sagging aging lower face and to improve the Jaw line.

These devices certainly can be removed. However the ease of removal is dependent on several factors including:

· The type of implant that was placed

· The location of the incision used during surgery

· Was the Chin Implant fixated-that means was the device kept in place with a screw, permanent suture or other method to hold it in place

· Porous -These polyethylene devices have small Micro porous channels to allow the blood vessels to grow into the device and hold it in place. These are more difficult to remove because they adhere tightly to the bony tissues.

· Smooth Silicone-These devices are made of smooth firm silicone rubber. The surrounding tissues do not grow into the device but form a "capsule" around the device. They are very easy to remove because they are not adherent to the bone.

Location of Incision

· Sub mental Incision- This is an external skin incision made under the chin through which the device is placed. It certainly can be opened and the device removed. However be aware that you will have a fresh incision that will have to heal and can be visible from the outside.

· Intra oral Incision- the Intra Oral Incision is made inside the mouth in the sulcus between your lower lip and lower teeth. This incision is not visible to the outside. Removal of the device is slightly easier through the Intra Oral approach.

Is it fixated?

Surgical fixation involves using a stainless steel screw, plate or permanent suture to hold the chin implant in place. Many surgeons, myself included do not use a fixation device for this procedure. However some surgeons do. It is important that the surgeon who will do the removal know ahead of time if he/she has to remove a fixation device. Special tools are needed to remove screws and other fixation devices and these must be sterilized ahead of time.

The bottom line is that a chin implant can be easily removed by the surgeon who put it in. However if you are having a different surgeon remove it he/she will need to know the type that was put in, where the incision was, and whether fixation was done. The best way to plan for this is to contact the office of the doctor who put the device in and ask for your surgical records. You can present these documents to your new surgeon so that he/she has all of the important information. Thus armed your removal should go smoothly.
