Five Pointers You Learn Out Of Cooking School

A cooking school may provide you with the necessary credentials to make you a qualified chef, but there are a number of things it will not teach you anything about, that are important to cultivating a successful culinary career. This comes as no surprise though, since educational institutions, more often than not, teaches idealisms rather than reality. Regardless, this article should help you plan ahead for your future stint as a chef with pointers that are relevant to the culinary practice.

1. A laid-back attitude will not work. In the kitchen, it is always war. You always have to be on your toes and ready to jump into action if you want to become a chef. A real restaurant or hotel kitchen setting is chaotic, expeditious and uncomfortable. Because of the noisy and humid environment, people are often impatient and easily irritated. The leisurely pace of cooking school demonstrations and network shows do not apply in the real world.

2. Success can only be achieved through hard work. You can't expect to work as a chef sitting down. Working smart will not you get anywhere in the field. You have to learn how to multi-task if you wish to be a participant in the culinary industry, and the more responsibility you take on, the better your chances will be at a promotion. If you pursue being a chef, you have to dedicate your time and a significant portion of your life to it.

3. It pays to speak up. It's all about getting yourself some respect. As mentioned earlier, the kitchen is a battleground, and people have the tendency to get territorial. If you have an idea that could benefit the team, it would be best if you communicate clearly and concisely. If there is a task at hand, it is important that you move quickly and decisively. Ask questions when you don't know, or are not sure about something. Provide answers when you understand something. Just never confuse the terms speaking up and speaking out, and forget your place in the hierarchy.

4. You will have to do a lot more to be called a "bonafide chef". It's not enough that you graduated with credits. You have to gain experience to achieve certain milestones and become a well-rounded, fully integrated member of the culinary practice, before you can consider yourself a real professional. But even then, you have to wait for other people to recognize your achievements before you claim it as a title. Remember, there is a big difference between cooking at home for a few guests and creating menus, managing a kitchen and catering to parties with hundreds of guests.

5. The rewards won't be immediate, but if you are patient enough and if you endeavour to do your best at every step of the way, everything you aspire for will be realized with perfect timing - whether it is a private employment or business ownership. Don't be discouraged right away with your small starting income and 50 hours per week schedule. Just bear with the stress and take on two jobs in order to reimburse student loans and make ends meet. Eventually, the right opportunity will present itself to you, and the rest will fall into place.
