Cooking Tips - Planning a Child's Birthday Party

April 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 135

Planning a child's birthday party involves more than just sending out the invitations and preparing the decorations. You also have to create a menu that incorporates foods the kids will find delectable. Following a few essential cooking tips is all you need to make the party special for your child and his or her friends. You want it to be a day to remember after all.

First, choose a theme for the birthday party. A theme will automatically eliminate some foods, and bring others to the forefront. For example, a barbecue theme eliminates tacos and spaghetti, but brings hamburgers and hotdogs to the top of your list. If your child has a favorite superhero, make that your theme. The Incredible Hulk might make you include mostly green foods, while Elmo lends himself to the color red.

Second, scour through several food blogs to discover the foods that children go crazy for. Select any of the items that go along with your theme. I find that kids tend to gravitate toward things like chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, cupcakes, ice cream, smoothies, deviled eggs, pigs in a blanket, veggies and dip, cheese and pepperoni trays, fruit salad, and sandwiches that are cut into sailboat shapes.

Third, consider how you are going to present the food. This is one of the most important cooking tips. Children are visual. Again, you want to tie this in with your birthday party theme. If your party is centered on Barney, you are going to want to have a scene out of the show taking place on the top of the cake. You may also want to create smoothies that are purple or green in color so that they look like Barney or Baby Bop. If you can't find foods that are naturally colored to meet your needs, use a little food coloring. A few drips in your deviled egg mixture can make all the difference.

Finally, don't forget to ask your child what types of foods he wants at his birthday party. Chances are you will be able to incorporate his favorite items in a way that ties in with the overall theme. Of course, you are bound to have a few appetizers that don't match the theme, but the goal is to tie as many of the dishes into the theme as possible.

Don't worry if you get stuck for ideas in the beginning of your planning stage. There are an enormous amount of food blogs available to help you create the perfect menu.
