Chase Away The Heat With A Tasty Smoothie

June 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 148

The ironic thing about summer is that we wait for it all year and we forget all about the heat and stickiness that comes with it. My workplace is only a 10 minute walk away but by the time I make it to my office I'm already drenched with sweat. I'm a big fan of drinking smoothies to chase away the heat but I don't like to buy them at juice bars or coffee shops. I prefer to make them myself and I've picked up some pretty great tips when it comes to making delicious smoothies. Take a look and follow my advice and you'll find yourself sipping the best smoothies you've ever tasted.

Get fresh ingredients

Some people like frozen fruits because they keep a lot longer but I really prefer fresh fruits. There's a certain taste that comes with fresh fruits that you just can't get with frozen varieties. I also find that frozen berries and melons have a freezer burn aftertaste that's really unpleasant in a smoothie. It's a good idea to buy fresh fruits because they taste better, they're juicier, and they have all of their nutrients intact. The color that fresh fruits give off is also really vibrant and lively and it's perfect for the summer.

Get your ice cubes right

Most people don't know how important ice cube size is when it comes to making smoothies. They just throw in whatever their automatic freezers make for them or they use cubes that are way too big. When you're grinding smoothies, you should really use small ice cubes or ice shavings. They grind down a lot easier which helps the blades of your blender to stay strong and sharp. They also prevent chunks of ice from forming in your mixed drinks.

Go for a quality juice blend

A lot of people like to use any old juice in their smoothies because they figure it's going to get mixed and blended anyways. I don't believe in this at all because I really feel that the juice is just as important as the fruits. Think of the juice in a smoothie as a flavor enhancer which good quality brands heightening the taste while poor quality ones dull it. Go for fresh juices that are either freshly squeezed or from concentrate. You don't have to buy expensive brands all the time but you should avoid juices that are nothing more than powder, sugar, and water.

Buy a good blender

The tricky thing about buying a blender is the fact that there are so many cheap options out there. Most people think, "Why bother with a $100 device when I can get one for $20?" When it comes to blenders, however, you really are getting what you pay for. Cheap blenders are not meant to be used for a long time since the parts are cheap and the engineering isn't the greatest. You have to invest in a high quality blender because it will mix your drinks properly and it will last for years. Make sure you don't skimp on the price when it comes to buying a blender.

So with those hot summer nights fast approaching, block out the heat by making your own smoothies. It's pretty easy to do as long as you follow the four steps mentioned above.
