Is Expensive Cookware Worth It?

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 177

New kitchen cookware could easily cost you a couple hundred dollars for just a few essential pieces. When purchasing new cooking sets what really matters?

Do you really need the entire set or would you be happier with just a few essential pieces? Should you get stainless cookware or nonstick cookware? How much should you be looking to spend for good kitchen cookware? These are all very good questions to ask.

When you begin shopping, you will notice a large difference in pricing. You can easily pick up a new nonstick skillet for $20 at Target. You can also waltz into Bed Bath and Beyond and leave with an $800 complete cooking set.

Cooking sets have a large price range based on a number of things including:

· Quality of materials

· Handles

· Brand name

A complete nonstick aluminum kitchen set will only set you back a few hundred dollars, but overtime it may not prove to be the best investment.

Aluminum cookware is thin, making it easy to dent and scratch. In addition, nonstick kitchen sets will lose their Teflon coating overtime due to cooking at high heat and scratching from spoons and dish brushes.

Cheap sets or cooking may be perfect for the occasional cook, college student or a new family, but don't expect it to last forever. If you are looking for kitchen cookware to stay in your life for a while, invest in something a bit heavier such as copper or stainless cookware. Always weigh your cookware before purchasing it as some cookeware, especially stainless steel cookware, can be very heavy to handle.

When considering kitchen cookware, your first thought is probably not the handles, but they play an enormous role.

Handles should be sturdy so that they do not come lose overtime. Cheap cookware may have flimsy handles that come lose, melt, or even break.

Pay attention to what the handles are made of. Plastic handled cooking sets are not oven safe. Do you like to keep dishes warm in the oven? Do you prefer your kitchen cookware to have multiple functions? Plastic or rubber handles may not be for you.

Some metal handles conduct heat and will be extremely hot to the touch making even the thickest oven mitts hide in their corner. Invest in kitchen cookware with quality handles that stay cool to the touch and will hold up over time.

As with any product, brand names can inflate a price. We're not recommending you shell out for Emril Legasse kitchen cookware just because you enjoy his overuse of the word "Bam!" or his heavily seasoned sauces, but brand name does play a role in cookware.

Do your research ahead of time to discover which brand names are notorious for short life and falling apart.

The most important decision when choosing new kitchen cookware is you! Shop around and learn more about what your cooking needs are to find the perfect kitchen cookware for you.

Ask yourself:

How often do I cook?

What types of food do I cook regularly?

Is the look of my cookware important to me?

How rough am I on my cookware?

Remember! All chefs are not created equal! What kind are you?
