Prevent Unplanned Pregnancy With Hormonal Contraceptive Pills

August 02, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 177

Contraception has now gained a great deal of importance, especially among women who try to prevent unplanned pregnancies. Until recently, men used condoms as a contraceptive method, which at times failed. With hormonal contraceptive methods now available, avoiding such contraceptive accidents has become easier for women. Oral contraceptive pills are quite commonly used by women among the other hormonal contraceptive methods. It has been observed that other hormonal contraception such as contraceptive patches and contraceptive rings are gradually becoming popular among women as well. All of these hormonal contraceptive methods work with the help of artificial female hormones present in them.

What are the different types of oral contraceptive pills?

Oral contraceptive pills are divided into two categories of combined pills, which are commonly referred to as 'the pill' and the mini pill. This division is carried out on the basis of the female hormones present in the pills. Combined pills or the pill consist of two artificial female hormones which allow them to protect women against pregnancy in three different ways. The mini pill, which is often mistakenly believed to be a lighter dosage of the combined pill, consists of only one artificial female hormone and works completely independently for the prevention of pregnancy. The mini pills usually prevent sperm from entering the womb and also alter the womb lining for the prevention of pregnancy.

What are combined pills?

As said earlier, combined pills consist of two artificial female hormones: oestrogen and progestogen. The first of the combined pills was introduced in the 1960s. Combined pills are the most popular form of contraceptive pills, owing to the fact that along with protecting you against pregnancy, it also helps in regulating your periods, making them less painful and minimising the risk of developing ovarian cysts and symptoms of endometriosis. A wide variety of combined pills are available for women, of which Yasmin pill is one of the most commonly used.

What is Yasmin?

Yasmin, also referred to as 'the pill', is a combined pill, which consists of two artificial female hormones. It consists of ethinylestradiol (artificial oestrogen, 30 micrograms) and drospirenone (3 milligrams) as its active ingredients. With the help of these ingredients, Yasmin works by tricking your body into believing that ovulation has already occurred, so as to prevent production of an egg. Secondly, it thickens the cervical mucus in the womb so as to prevent a sperm from entering and fertilizing an egg. And lastly, it alters the womb lining so that even if an egg is produced and fertilized, it cannot attach and grow further.

Yasmin can also help in improving the appearance of your skin and treating excessive hair growth. You can buy this pill if you are 18 years old or above, but should avoid using it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You need to take this pill for 21 days of your menstrual cycle, with a seven day break in between. Usually, Yasmin is a well-tolerated pill, but some women can experience certain side effects. The most common side effects of the pill include headaches, menstrual changes, nausea, breast pain and abdominal pain.
