Emergency Contraception - Information Every Woman Should Know

July 27, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 97

Practicing safe sex in this day in age is essential. With sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) at their highest indecent rate in history, people need to take precaution whenever possible. Unfortunately, no form of contraception is 100% effective. Likewise, there are times when we make bad decisions and don't use any contraceptive device. It is times like these that emergency contraception can be used.

Enter Next Choice Emergency Contraception

Next Choice is an emergency contraception pill that can be taken to avoid pregnancy. It is also known as the morning after pill. For best results, a woman should take it within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. It is 99.9% effective when used correctly.

Once taken, the pill uses the hormone progestin to keep a woman's ovaries from releasing eggs. The man's sperm in a woman's body will have no egg to join and therefore the woman will not become pregnant. The Next Choice pill also thickens a woman's cervical mucus which aids in the sperm blocking process.

Who Should Use It?

Women age 17 and older can obtain Next Choice from their local drugstore or health center (like Planned Parenthood) without a prescription. Women younger than 17 will need a prescription from their doctor or from a health care center. If a woman is sexually active, it is a good precautionary measure to purchase some to have at your house. That way, in the event of an emergency, you'll be able to take the pill right away which will lead to the highest success rate.

This pill is only designed to avoid pregnancy; it will not protect a woman from contracting an STD. Also, if a woman is already pregnant, Next Choice will not work as a form of abortion. After taking the pill, if you do not have your period within 3 weeks, you should consider taking a pregnancy test or seeing your physician.

Is Next Choice Safe?

Using Next Choice is completely safe. Millions of women have used this type of contraception over recent years with no reported serious complications. With that being said, it should only be used in emergency situations and not be used as regular birth control or contraception. One of the reasons is that taking Next Choice can produce side effects like:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches

The list above only lists a few of the mild side effects from taking Next Choice, though there are many more.
