Diaphragm Contraceptive - Tried and Tested By Many Women

June 30, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 149

The diaphragm contraceptive has been used by women over many centuries now although the modern ones are certainly more reliable and easier to use than the earlier forms. The diaphragm contraceptive is a simple barrier device that a woman has to use in order to prevent pregnancy. This is a rubber device shaped like a dome that the woman has to insert into her vagina. It is positioned over the cervix so that it prevents sperm from moving into the uterus.

The diaphragm contraceptive is the preferred method of birth control for women who do not have sex very often. They can insert the diaphragm into their vagina in preparation for sex. Once worn correctly, it is impossible for the woman or her partner to feel its presence. It is best used in conjunction with a spermicidal cream or gel in case the woman wants a greater sense of security from pregnancy.

There are a few drawbacks to using a diaphragm contraceptive. For starters, getting fitted for one is an arduous process. It is also rather invasive. The doctor has to suggest a diaphragm that fits the woman's cervix exactly in order to ensure that it does not slip and let any sperm cells pass through. These devices require a lot of maintenance in order for them to be effective. A woman will have to get a new device if she loses or gains weight because the cervix can change size accordingly. It should also be checked regularly for holes since they occur over time and as a result of wear and tear.

Many women fit these devices incorrectly. Many others remove them too soon after sex. A diaphragm should be kept in place for at least 6 hours after sex in order to ensure that the sperm cannot pass through to the uterus. In fact, a woman who expects to have sex a few hours after the first encounter can add some more spermicide rather than removing the diaphragm. It is important for her to select the spermicidal cream with care. Many of them can result in allergies and irritation for the woman or for her partner.

A diaphragm contraceptive has a rather low rate of success against pregnancy and that too only when it is used along with a spermicide. It does not protect against HIV/AIDS although it is believed to be effective against certain diseases such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or cervical cancer.

The biggest problem with using a diaphragm contraceptive is that many women simply forget to put them in before sex or they might not want to ruin the moment by taking a break to do something as unromantic as inserting a diaphragm. If this is a problem that you face often then this is not the best method of birth control for you. There are many other methods of contraception that give better results and which are completely trouble free. Talk to your doctor or gynecologist in order to find out more about these methods so that you can enjoy safe and trouble free sex.
