The Key to Doctor-Patient Connection

When you walk into a clinic you notice not just the appearance of the clinic; you can sense the state of mind of patients waiting for their appointments. You see pictures on walls with aphorisms and idioms related to the need to preserve health and some messages wishing you a speedy recovery. Apart from these positive and reassuring messages displayed on the walls of the clinic you experience anxiety as other patients do. What causes such high levels of fear in a patient? One factor of course is the illness itself that worries people and the other seems to be the doctor's diagnosis of their illness and the tension that comes with the information. Then there is a fear of how the doctor would deal with them.

When the patients enter with fear the doctors can ease them down and make them comfortable. This will make them ready to open up more easily. Although it is necessary to note down details and refer to documents regarding the diagnosis, before that it would be better to get the patients' account of their illness as they are people who directly experience it. The doctors are usually quick in diagnosing people with any illness that they might have, but it would be still better if a doctor could listen to the patient and talk them through a problem, (which many maybe doing). Doctors who specialize in dermatology (skin related care) and trichology (hair care) get many patients who tend to have low self-esteem. It is therefore necessary to attend to the psychological needs of the patient. Doctors would do well to not warn them straight away that worrying would make their problems worse.

A patient with low self image due to skin or hair diseases needs to be counseled. It would be difficult to guarantee results for a doctor but along with a list of instructions for the patient to do which includes the actual treatment, words of encouragement give them an open frame of mind. A doctor has to educate and interact with his/her patients in a manner that makes them comfortable. Let patients voice their concerns because they need to get information at the end of the session. If they do not understand then doctors need to explain their condition to them. Half the problem is solved when the appropriate choice of words and transparency are employed. There are training programs for doctors in these skills. The programs train medical students and practitioners in the art and science of effective communication, emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.

For a doctor, essential behavioural skills are necessary for them to be complete medical practitioners.
