Abundance in Business

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 123

The Book of Ruth describes the generosity of a man named Boaz. He followed the Israelite Law written in Deuteronomy that dictated rules for harvesting grain. One specific rule stated that Boaz was not to harvest the grain at the corners of his fields so that the poor could glean from his crop. These rules were not enforced during the time of Boaz, but he honored them anyway, believing that God had blessed him with an abundance, so that he could in turn bless others. This abundance-minded mentality allowed Boaz to be extremely generous.

The book of Matthew describes the fear of a servant. He was entrusted with one bag of gold from his master, and unlike others that were entrusted with bags of gold and invested them wisely, the servant buried his in the ground out of fear of losing that for which he was being held accountable. Upon return, the other servants gave back to the master double the amount they had been given, but all the fearful servant had to show for himself was the same bag of gold, a little dirtier than before. He was called lazy and was thrown out of the master's house. This scarcity-minded mentality led the servant to be extremely fearful.

The economy describes the stories of unsuccessful start-ups and failed businesses. Only 12% of entrepreneurial ventures in 2011 are still open for business and it is a much smaller percentage that actually finished the year in the black. However, even in the face of bleak statistics, BAMA (Business as Mission Agents) must be abundance-minded in our stewardship of the business God has entrusted us with. We must lead with our palms open to all God has blessed us with. If we allow ourselves to become fearful, fists-clinched, scarcity-minded business people that react to every potentially negative situation, then we might as well stare the Sovereign God that created and sustains the universe in the eye and tell Him that He is incapable, because we are already living as such. I challenge you to live with an attitude of an abundance, in opposition to the attitude of scarcity that so often grips those that have built their house on the sand. Consider the following ancient Israelite blessing read aloud from father's over their eldest sons, as you pursue a life of abundance:

"May God give you heaven's dew and earth's richness- an abundance of grain and new wine."
