Five Must-Haves for the Condo Life

June 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 163

So you are somewhere along the continuum between thinking about buying a condo and actually buying a condo. Let us welcome you to the condo lifestyle, and present you with a list of five essentials for the condo life, and, as a bonus, two things you probably can do without.

Storage ottoman

One of the best ways to conserve space in condos without giving up the things you love is to make your furniture perform double duty. A prime example is the storage ottoman. It looks just like a regular ottoman and feels just as comfy when you rest your feet on it, but open it up and inside you may find magazines or toys or whatever else would only be cluttering your life if it were not put away.

Insurance

Your condo association carries some sort of insurance policy that protects the building in the event of a fire or natural disaster, for example. But do not think that means you do not need extra insurance. Condo owners, at the very least, should have an HO-6 policy that protects their belongings. Want to take your insurance a step further? Get a personal liability policy that protects you from liability in case someone falls and breaks a leg in your condo, for example.

Floating shelves

Floor space is at a premium in many condos. If you have knick-knacks or other things that you just cannot bear to part with, but do you also do not have roof for standard shelves, then consider floating shelves. These take up only wall space and can be a great way to display the items you want displayed.

The right demeanor

People who live in condos live close to their neighbors. In extreme cases, you have neighbors above, below, and to each side if you. And even if you do not have that many of them, you likely will see them in the hallway, at the community pool, or on the elevator. If you have a sour demeanor or are rude to your neighbors, you will miss a key part of the condo life.

Urban appreciation

There just is no way around it: The vast majority of condo buildings are built in heavily urban areas. So if you are going to like the condo life, you better appreciate everything that urban settings offer.

Vehicle

One thing you probably can get away without having is a car. Why? In many cases, people who live in condos also work close by. And if they need to get somewhere? Well, public transportation probably is not far, either.

That sense of being tied down

As a condo owner you do not need to worry about mowing the lawn, raking the leaves, shoveling the snow, painting the outside of your home, worrying about your roof, or wondering if your furnace will go out. As a result, there is no need to feel tied down. If you want to get away for a long weekend, just pack up, lock the door, and go.
