Do I Have to Be an Artist to Live in a Loft?

May 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 142

The image of the loft life, at least as captured in movies, generally revolves around artists and other creative types. There is some historical accuracy to it, as artists in large cities often chose to live in open lofts because they afforded plenty of space and natural light in which to live and work. But the reality today is that the loft live may be suited for just about anyone, including artists, who wants to embrace it.

Following are several topics to consider before deciding whether or not loft living is right for you. These are things many people do not first think about when making the decision, but they more than likely will contribute to happiness or dissatisfaction with loft living.

Exercise

Lofts either will be in buildings that once were used for other purposes, like warehouses, or in structures designed specifically to accommodate them. If it is the former, it is likely the loft building will not have an elevator. So unless you are on the ground floor, that means a hike up and down the stairs every time you leave. That may not bother some people, but it can be a burden, especially if you are in and out a lot (that means you, dog owners).

Lights

Lofts tend to be in highly urban areas. That means the lights outside rarely, if ever, go out. There are streetlights, office building lights, ambulance lights, police car lights, neon lights from bars and restaurants. And the list could go on. So either you must get used to the light, or invest in some shades or blinds. Given the fact many lofts have large windows, it may not be a cheap proposition.

Noise

This follows in the lights vein. Urban areas generally are loud. There just is no way to escape that fact. Not only is the sound of cars and trucks nearly constant, but also you likely will hear sirens and people talking on the street. For some people, the noise is not an issue and is just a reminder of the vitality of the area. It can, though, be a problem for others.

Keeping it cool

If during the summer you like your home to be a constantly cool temperature, you will need air conditioning in your lofts. But given that lofts tend to be open and have high ceilings, that can be an expensive proposition. The good news is that lofts tend to stay fairly cool on their own. Why? Because of their high ceilings and concrete floors and walls. Add a fan on the ceiling and another on the floor and you may never miss having an air conditioner.
