Do I Belong in a Condo?

April 05, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 97

Some people looking to buy real estate know intuitively they want to live in a condo. But many people do not even consider the option, thinking they will live in a single-family home. The condo life is not for everyone, that is for sure, but buying a home is a big deal. Some people say it is the biggest decision you ever will make. So it makes sense to consider all of your options.

Here are a few things to keep in mind that will help you answer the question: Do I belong in a condo?

Love yard work?

If you love mowing the lawn and raking the leaves, the condo life may not be for you. That is because your condo association will hire someone to take care of the property. But if you have a friend or relative who needs help with the lawn, maybe you can live in a condo, after all.

Proximity to neighbors

There is no way around it. When you live in a condo, you will live in close proximity to your neighbors. You even will share a wall with some. You can still have your privacy, of course, but expect to run into people in the hallway. If you cannot handle living in close proximity to others, a condo may not be your best option.

Maintenance

People who live in single-family homes have to worry about things like air conditioners and furnaces going out. They also have to worry about replacing the roof and keeping the lawn fertilized. The reality is those are not things that condo-dwellers have to think about on a regular basis.

The city life

The condo life is pretty similar to the city life. That is because condo buildings generally are found in bustling metro areas, not rural places. So if you always wanted to live on a farm and be miles from the nearest neighbor, a condo is not for you. But if you appreciate leaving the building and being within walking distance of sporting events, night clubs and restaurants, then a condo may be ideal for you.

Amenities

Like the idea of having a pool, but not having to add chlorine or otherwise maintain it? Or how about a workout room? Round-the-clock security? Depending on the building you choose, all of these and more may be available. You will pay for the amenities through your association payments.
