A To-Do List for the Condo Life

May 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 122

Condominiums are homes for people ranging from young professionals to retirees. They provide shelter and a spot to eat and sleep. But once you get past the necessities of life, there is a lot of additional amenities condos offer. So if you already are a condo owner, or you are just exploring the possibility, following is a six-item to-do list.

Sell your rakes and shovels

Every time you write your monthly check to the condo association, you can take joy in knowing that part of your money will pay for maintenance. That means you do not have to worry about shoveling snow from the driveway or sidewalk, mowing the lawn, or raking the leaves. So unless you have somewhere else to use them, there is no use keeping rakes, shovels, and other lawn maintenance items around.

Plan a vacation

Condo owners do not have to worry about lawn maintenance. And since major appliances often are shared by the entire building, you do not have to worry about them. As a result, leaving is really just a matter of locking the door. One of the best ways to take advantage of the condo life is to plan a vacation. Get out of town for a few days or a week. You may be amazed by how nice it is to get away from it all.

Park the car

Condos tend to be in urban areas, which tend to have plenty of public transportation including buses and light-rail systems. You will save money and time, probably, by using such transportation options instead of paying for gas and to park your car at meters. That does not mean you cannot own a car, as many condo buildings also offer underground parking. It just means you can use your vehicle less.

Prioritize

By their nature, condos usually have less room, especially for storage, than do single-family homes. So if you have items you have not used in a year or so, toss them. Better yet, donate them to charity. And if you are a young person and just moving into your first place, do not worry about buying absolutely everything you think you may want or need. Instead, move in and take stock of what you need for you new place, including the available space, and then fill it up.

Open your door

When you live in a condo building, not only will your neighbors be close, but you also will share walls with them. So make the effort to meet them. Invite them in for a drink. If you have a good relationship, that will make it easier for you to ask them to water your plants when you are gone, or to ask them to keep their dog from barking at 3 a.m.
