Non Toxic Polyurethane Floor Coatings - The Smart Alternative

February 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 201

Industrial floor coatings are highly recommended for any workplace primarily because non-coated concrete floors are subject to abrasion, excessive friction and damage from vehicles, chemicals and oil. As a result, floors tend to develop unseemly patches where water seeps through the pores of the floor.

Additionally, concrete surfaces that are not given commercial floor coatings are difficult to clean without the use of excess toxic chemicals. Just think of how difficult it is to get the grease off a garage floor. Concrete surfaces can be unattractive, dull and boring, while floor coatings can be given almost any color and pattern.

This does not mean that any sort of floor coatings will do the same job. Unfortunately, conventional coatings often contain solvents in high amounts with toxic isocyanates. Those who work with these coatings are affected by the noxious odors of toxins, and may develop several problems of the respiratory tract and lungs. These manifest themselves as tightness of the chest and in prolonged cases of exposure, asthma.

Those who live or work where such coatings are being applied also have to stay away from the vapors for a certain time or they may suffer from nausea, drowsiness, headaches and vomiting. Skin and mucous membranes are also irritated by toxic polyurethane. Accordingly, most industrial floor coatings come with their own unique hazardous consequences. When such toxic floor coatings are used, precautions are to be observed. These strict health and safety measures require a considerable sum of money to be properly implemented.

There is a better alternative, which will help you avoid the handling of toxic substances and also the high expenses involved. Green polyurethane is different form of polyurethane and contains absolutely no isocyanates or other harmful substances. It's a type of modified hybrid polyurethane that combines the properties of polyurethane and epoxy binders, which is used in coatings and in paints. There are no steps in its production which use chemicals that may pose a risk of injury to health and most regulatory agencies are now recommending polyurethane without the use of isocyanates.

The benefits of using non toxic polyurethane coatings do not end here. Such coatings are impervious to moisture (they are stable and do not undergo changes in chemical composition upon contact with water) and are much more resistant to corrosion from chemical exposure than conventional floor coatings. Polyurethane is also resistant to a wider range of chemicals and has superior adhesive properties. Finally, Durability is enhanced, giving the consumer much more value for their money.

John Primus is an industrial chemist from Southern California who advocates using non toxic polyurethane from Green Companies like Hybrid Coating Technologies a Northern California high tech coatings company.
