Choosing A Concrete Overlay Is a Green Solution

February 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 192

Just for a minute, think about all the concrete you walk on throughout the day. It's under our homes, on our roadways & bridges, our malls, grocery stores, amusement parks, parking garages, hospitals, etc. All of it, will sooner or later, stain, discolor, crack, and become unlevel. Just imagine if all the concrete you walk on throughout the day is eventually broken up & tossed in a land fill! If we care about our grandchildren's planet, we have to do differently, think outside the box.

Before concrete overlays were introduced, the only way to fix old, stained, and cracked concrete was to remove it and pour a new slab. The concrete removal process is quite extensive depending on how large the concrete slab is. It must first be broken up into to many, smaller, movable pieces. Next it has to be hauled away and disposed of, usually in a landfill. If you have ever done any concrete work, you know the pieces are usually very thick, heavy and take up a lot of space.

When consumers, engineers, and architects are suitably educated in the field, it is by far most economical and eco-friendly to resurface concrete instead of ripping out and pouring new. It also eliminates tons and tons of waste. As living beings that are able to think and reason, we must hold ourselves accountable for the amount of waste each of us produce. There is only one Earth and is majestic, it is our duty as part of humankind to protect and preserve it.

Decorative concrete is a growing trend in the construction industry. Resurfacing concrete is the most environmentally friendly decision, commercial and residential property owners can make. When you choose to resurface concrete, you are saving time, money, and creating a better Earth for years to come.

While decorative concrete overlays are extremely resourceful, there is yet another benefit to solidify its importance. Without losing any strength and durability, the design and pattern possibilities are endless, with concrete overlays. The materials used such as a polymer modified, cementitious, resurfacing mix, can be applied from 3/16" down to a feathered edge. These types of overlay mixes can also be colored, stained, stenciled and patterned, to meet the most demanding design needs.

If your concrete is slab is "sound", it can be successfully resurfaced. Stains, small cracks, discolorations, pitting, etc. are all fixable. So, please before you start tearing up that old concrete slab, consider resurfacing it. When you choose to resurface you are in a great sense recycling your concrete; you are putting it to use again.

Learning to live with less, using what you already have, and focusing on giving back; putting all these concepts to use surprisingly creates incredible, stress free living.
