An Introduction To Different Tests For Checking Concrete Strength

May 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 327

Testing concrete for strength is vital to our safety and makes sure that concrete used in constructions is according to standards which would withstand stress for a number of years to come. In the following discussion we will look at several different factors which are quite important and are directly related to such testing.

Weight measurement prior to compression tests

Normally you will see that weight of a concrete block is checked prior to a compression test to make sure that its weight is as required. The required value of weight that this block should have is arrived at by multiplying volume with density. In case it is found that the desired weight is not present then it means that the material is not right and compression testing is not done as such block is of no use in construction work.

Use of Rebound Hammers

These hammers are used for checking surface hardness but the test can not be used to accept or reject any material and the test results should always be correlated to results of compressive strength checks. The reason for this is that there are many other factors which affect the results of rebound hammer tests apart from strength of the materials being tested such as finish, carbonation present in the material, smoothness of the surface and amount of moisture in the material.

SSC Testing

There are several tests which can be performed according to ASTM to check properties of self consolidating concrete, these are:

1. Slump Flow: It measures stability, deformability and viscosity of the mix. 2. J Ring: This confirms passing ability of the mixture. 3. Column Segregation: It helps to evaluate static stability present in any mix. 4. L-Box: This confirms any mixture's passing ability. 5. V-Funnel: It is used to authenticate any mixture's viscosity. 6. Segregation Probe: Used to verify mortar layer's thickness.

Benefits of Slump Test

Let us now look at some of the benefits of slump test:

1. It shows water context variations in case uniformity exists in aggregates grading. 2. Grading variations are indicated if constancy is noticed in surface mixture consisting fine aggregates and accuracy exists in water percentage in the mixture.

Conclusion

To conclude we will say that there are different tests which assist in evaluation of strength and ensure that right concrete is being used for construction purposes. These tests check various properties of concrete to make sure they adhere to required standards.
